Nine wasn 't bad, with a nice photog enic camber ed rock slab climb by a dead tree , The good guys in each class rode 'em like freewa ys ; in fact , some of the combin ed-clas s traps had as many entranc es and exits as a freeway , but fortuna tely, well marked (Novice s this way , Beginn ers that exit, Seniors over here, Gas/Fo od/Lod ging down there). Everyb ody boogied in well under the time limit with an eye to the sky, afraid that if the heaven s really opened up Saddle back would be closed in mid-tri al. But not this time. Good riding and suprem o traction Mike Lauxen made Novice this day with a one-po int Beginn er ride (Beginn er? It almost seems that kid was born riding trials). Tim Ziegler soundly beat a doub le ration of Novices; ' Duane Foland took a close amateu r win over Mark Webste r Mike Griffitt s, testing out a pre· Bassan i prototy pe produc t ion silencer /spark arresto r on his 348 , was fifth Expert, three points behind Martin Belair. Funny thing about the 348s, guys coming off of 247 Cotas are all saying, " Boy it really takes getting used to the new scooter ; it's almost got too much horsepo wer. Folks like Martin Belair, back from a workin g interns hip at the Montes a factory in Spain, Jeff Koskie, who's been living in Colorad o , even Steve Graham , who's hardly been on a trials bike since ruining his shoulde r over two years ago - it was like old times in the Expert class . And just like old times, too. was the Expert final Marlan d Wha ley first , results Bernie Schreib er second , Mark Eggar third, with Marlan d and Bernie both under 10 points for four loops. With a little spitting rain just tacking down the soil , it was a relativ ely easy , fun trial. The trial , open to anybod y who showed up , was £Cee, as was the school held in the mornin g. Derreck Bernar d posted a clean ride to win the Novice class, blatant ly display ing his ATA No . 1A Kids plate. Ken Mullins journey ed down from Bakersf ield and took second , droppin g just four marker s , lchabo d Inman debute d his new 250 Sherpa to take . third . W. McKe!r ey topped Bob Lindqu ist in the Beginn er class . S. Bjonlie led the juniors , droppin g 22 Top Califo rnia ri ders Andy Faust, J e rry Stewa rt, Co r ki Moore , Cu rtiss Johnso n, Kerri Paulso n , C a rl Paulso n , and Terry "T un a" Tu rner along with David King, Dave Anders on , Marc Metzer. and Ed Wallet from Tucson came out to try and beat Phoeni x's best. They didn't, but the compet ition was really close. Tuna Turner came close to placing in the top five in the 250 Expert class but instead he chose to take a sample of the good Phoeni x soil. Carl Paulsen fell in practic e and hurt his back bad enough so that he had to be taken to the hospita l to have it checked out , althoug h he was back to watch and enjoy the races. Corki Moore was having trouble s getting himself and the bike to work togethe r and get into rhythm . The riders fro m Tucson did pretty well, especia lly David King who raced in the 125 Amateu r class . He placed first overall. Reid, Tur ner fly while Bimbo bombs By Dann y Raym ond ORAN GE, CA . , DEC. 18, 1976 FMFs Honda ace, Warre n Reid , flew to yet anothe r 125 Pro win durin g Sa tu rd a y's 40 -minu te rnotos . Warre n's neares t compe tition came from Honda mounte d Tony Wanke t a nd Warren 's teamm ate Cliff " Beau fort " Lett. Wanke t and Lett split second position s through out both motos . Scott Gilman rod e his Orange County Cycle's Yamah a to a welldeserve d win d u ring the O pen Pro rounds . Scott's win didn't come easy though , he was constan tly being pushed by Richee Collins (KTM) a nd Maico mount ed Dale Anders on. Signed up as "Merle Anders on," for some reason o r a nother , Honda 's newest super sta r, J im " Bim bo" Pomeroy was quickly identifi ed as he motore d his Type 2 Honda around Saddleb ack's track. Bim bo seemed to be having tro u ble getting used to his new mount as he pulled out of both motos, after some heavy dicing wit h Ken Mo rgan (Suz) . Du ring t he 250 Pro action, Wheels mith's Montesa pilot Jon " Derham mer opened up the first moto with an early lead that was soon eaten up by FMF's Ron Turner .
