LUCERNE VALLEY, CAL. , DEC. 12 900 family enduro riders to try their luck at CRC's last point paying event of the year. The Santa Claus has traditionally been one of CRG's easier enduro's and this year's was no exception. Except for some deep sand on the first loop (which women and begi nners tend to dislike very much), there wasn't much of a challenge for the better riders. CRC referee Jerry McNeal planned it j ust t hat wa . "A" riders like Harry Keast thought it was boring , b ut the majori ty of riders thought it was a lot of fun . It all depends on your perspective. "B " rider Mike Rich made it around the 63 mile course without losing any points, but more importantly without losing any seconds at the two tiebreaker checks to convincingly lock up the sweepstakes win . Mike 's buddy claimed it was his first B ri d e , probably his last if hiscompetition has anything to say about it . Mike rode an enduroized Yamaha 400 . Bar Bender Larry Twait, sweepstakes winner at the last CRC enduro, dropped two seconds while teammate Walt Tabor dropped three along with some guy called the Enduro Squid who thumped his way around the course on a red and black four stroke. Speeds were moderate and pretty well matched to the terrain. Dust was its usual problem in Lucerne Valley but there isn't . much anyone can do about it . The toughest part of the enduro was a short section lead ing into the second loop tiebreaker and the last three miles into the second loop finish. Ab out half the riders were late as the course ra n at a fast 24 MPH a verage cross grain across the rav ines leading out of the hills surrounding Anderson Dry Lake, site of the pits. Word of a couple who got married Saturday nigh t and spent the day at the enduro were received but I couldn't fin d ou t thei r names. Sure are dedicated enduro riders. DEC. 12 Roger Bartling (Hon) made it a double win to effectively take the 125 Intermediate class in what was a hot and heavy d ay of racing for the CRC at Racing World . On ea ch start, Ba rting would get the holeshot a nd proceed to walk away fr om everybody else. Leads up to ten seconds set by Roger were the norm as the rest of the pack floundered in the dust. John Wi lson (Hon) came in second behind Roger in the first mota followed by Jim Rice (Hon) . In the seco nd m oto Jeff Ho llie (Yam) was tagging on Roger's back door for second ; that and a first moto fifth place was good for second overall . Rice remained fairly consistent and finished fourth to take the show position. Likewise, Mark Lawrence (Yam) scored back to back wins to snatch the Time is Mother Nature's way of making sure everything doesn't happen at once.
