ninth overall and winner of the Jack Benny Amateur-Expert class . Jay McGinnis, also of Big Piney, was th ird overall and took the Open Expert cla ss. Ken had just won th e First Senior Hea vyweight prize at So. Cal. 's Turkey Chase on November 14. An addict . Originall y th e club wanted to hold th e race a Wasatch Mountain St ate Park, but didn't succeed in gettin g permission from the sta te DOT to use the roads, even though they would have been closed to traffic by then . The only sit e available from the BLM on three week 's notice was Delle. The Sal t Lake District BLM has a particularly heavy work load this fall . T hey're hiring more personnel which will help in th e future. ' District Recreation Planner Geoff. Middaugh rode and approved the course after it was set , (after he had sent written instructions) says they are mostly concerned with protection of grazing animals and environmen tal impacts such as use of steep downhills which could gully, but also are concerned with ra cer sa fety. The cou rse had a lot of variety. Starting a few miles west of the Delle freeway exi t, riders took a fast run down damp, smooth sa lt flats , as if they were at time trials at Bonneville (al though these flats' are salty fine soil, not crystalline salt). The course then went up . on the Cedar Mountains to the ridge, around and back down on roads and trails , some rocky. Soft ridges coming down to the fla ts caused' a few riders to eat silt on th e last go around. Then left past some hummocks to Svturns on the flats and back to the start. The lead riders really went for it at the start. Don Fuller, who was second to the incredible Jack Johnson at Cherry Creek, was first to the flat . Robert Howard of Price, Utah, a very good MXer;as well as desert rider was second. Scott Gerber (son of old desert fox Preston Gerber) and Bob Sward passed them starting the second loop because they d idn't stop for gas. Something happened to ' Fuller's bike. Sward passed h im and seized . Scott Gerber was leading at the end of the second lap and Howard was second. They finished one-and -two . Watching th e racers' progress ,got difficult after a while as the front runners lapped the slower ri ders who tended to go berserk on some of the narrower spots knowing faster riders were hanging just behind - them wanting to pass. Preston Gerber had trouble with his borrowed Yam TT 500 , finished wa y down in th e listings. Several bikes got crunched in pract ice but there were few human injuries, Dave Spencer's son Davey welded his broken swingarm just in time to start; th en rode to a win in the 125 Amateur class. T ed Thornton, naturally a fourstroke rid er sinc e he's a Honda de al er , said the roc ks some co m p laine d abou t were okay for four-str okes and 'slowed do wn the hot-shoes. Pacer Honda fol k Robert Howard, SLMC 2nd overall, goes for it down the flats. Dorde Woodruff photo.
