Gu s Paull heldoff a strong challenge from Gordon Schmid to ret ain his Number One plate in the Seni or class. Leslie Klug came on strong toward s th e en d of th e year to take the Powder Puff points lead away from consistent Jolene Pa yne. Kelly Kline had th e Mini class championship locked up early. ' . Rob by Kennedy finished 10th overall and won th e Mini class . Elva Earll (175 Yam ) was first Beginner Powder Puff. Scott Ward (250 Hon). a winner th e previous week . won th e 250 /0pen Begi nner race handily. Mike Fr ank (250 Suz) and Cory Bonham (250 Yam) grabbed th e. next two spots . Lenny Hancock borrowed a 400 Mono 'a n d took his first class win at fourth. Roy Bonham (500 Yam) moved up from third to win th e Senior Begi nner contest. A close . race-long battle for th e first three position s highligh ted th e 250 / 0 pen Novic e race . Rod ney Roderick (250 Yam) led it all the way . but he was closely followed by . Tim _ Sloa n and R ick Burrus, both on 400 KTMs. The trio fin ished nearly elbowto- handlebar, -with Roderick winning and Bu rrus nudging Sloan at the last second for second. Tom Brooks thi s time led th e Amateur/Expert race to the bomb. Again, Balentine was stuck in the thick of Brooks' dust . The pair were 10 to 20 seconds apart throughout the race: with Balentine pulling to within 20 feet when Brooks pitted. Morgan Malocco again ran third thoughout the race, despite loSing fourth and fifth gears at the midway point. Mike J oh nston moved up to fourth , just as he had done in the Silver Cu p. The top four were set at the halfway mark. Phil Stumbo (250 CZ) . was in at fifth overall, just a head of Dea n Kir k (250 Hus), the first Amateur . Kirk had a n excellent ride the day before , finishing seventh in the Silver Cu p . Monte Lee had to retu rn ' to his Yamaha 250 a fter losing h alf th e spokes in his new H usk y's re'!.r wheel the p revious day. He finis hed seventh . Tim Pla n t (175 DMG) recovered from a multiple-kick -a nd -then -pus h start to pass teammate Rick Muller ( 175 DMG ) for t he ' class lead about a mi le fro m the finis h . Mu ller, who ad m itt ed he go t caught sleeping, crashed trying to get by Plant , and lost a place to Mike Co le (Hus) , who got second 250 Ama teur.
