(Suz), put on a really good ride in the first moto to finish up second overall. In the second round, another . Intermediate, Roger Bartling (Hon), scooted ahead of Scott for second, still giving the top Novice spot to Fulton. In the last go, Graham had all wired, but second went this time to another Novice , Duane Mapes (Hon) with Fulton third. Bartling wound up with second 125 Intermediate, while Fulton had the Novices bagged with Mapes second and Danny Keys (Yam) third. Consistent Open Expert winner Mark Brooks (Suz) once again nabbed it but was only a flat tire from sweeping the combined big bore class. Mark had a super lead in the first moto, followed only distantly by 250 Intermediate Don Glover (Yam) , until his rear tire went flat. Brooks retired one lap from the flag, and Glover stepped in to take it instead. In the next two starts,_Brooks' tire managed to stay round as Mark went on to take back-eo-back overall wins. • Bau.er wires , De Anza, Fish take Intermediates By Ron Law son DE ANZA , CAL. , NOV. 28 Although CRC always attracts some fine Experts, DG's Steve Bauer showed once again ' his mastery of the De Anza Cycle 22 Park track. Shooting out of the hole, he immediately captured the 125 lead . But he was not unchallenged. John Atwood, riding for FMF on a Honda , was within striking distance for most of the race but Steve never gave him an opportunity to get by. The 125' Intermediate race was equally interesting with the extraordinary Sue Fish in the competition. At the start it was Mike Dickherber (Suz) who grabbed the lead with Jeff Hollie (Yam) right on his heels. It seemed like , they were all alone for nearly half of the moto , battling only with each other. On the seventh lap. Sue seemed to come from nowhere to make her bid against Hollie; She had been working her way up from the back of the pack. After passing Jeff, she really put the heat on Dickherber . With less than two laps to go , she got by and took the lead. In the first moto it was Fish-L, Dickherber-2 and Craig Gormley in third. . In the next round , it was Dickherber out in front again, but this time Sue didn't have quite so much time to make up . By lap number four she took the lead and began stretching it out. In the closing laps of the race, however, Danny Burtt (Yam) started coming on strong, pressuring Sue right down to the line . But, in the end, Sue came out the victor. • Goat's R.A.C.E. MX By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL., NOV. 26 Goat Breker h ad more competition than he's seen in a while and bo th Lee Rosenberry and Mark Brooks made him work for his money. Goat still won all three, but it was not before he had trea ted the spectators ct o some heart stopping riding . Lee and Mark played the change-places game with Mark making a short trip out in the boondocks in the . last moto which dropped him to third. Mark Rawley continued his successful win streak as a pro as he parlayed his first moto second into two wins and the overall in the 250cc class. Perkins only double winner By Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL. , NOV. 24 Danny Perkins was cookin' Wednesday night on the Corona ovals and was the only rider to score a double victory as he collected the gold in the . 250cc Amateur/Expert Short Track and •Half Mile. Danny was off the line first . in the Short Track and it was follow the leader time as Dylan Neihart and Mike Baeder locked in behind him and never changed places once. The Half Mile was much the same story but Scott Polson drives in f or the Elsinore win. chased by Magic Chr is Choisser this time it was Mike Minnig in the second place slot and Dylan was dropped to third. Even though the lead was never lost by Danny it was still a close race with Mike trying to get a wheel under him every chance he got. Unfortunately for Mike, Danny has raced against him enough to know all his tricks and was able to out fox him. Mike had no trouble collecting the bucks in the Money Short Track where he introduced the art of the West Coast style to Bob Neisen who was out from Indiana for the holidays. Bob is used to the limestone surface of his home state and didn't quite know what to do with the damper Corona surface. The Half Mile saw Wayne Rainey battle with Dave .Peters for eight laps before he was able to get by him and put a little cushion between himself and the rest of the field. Dave had a super hold on second until the 14th of the 15 laps when attrition problems forced him out. Mike Minnig was more than happy to fill in the second place slot and it was again Dylan in third. • . Polson scores . agaIn By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE, CAL., NOV. 20 A bunch of buddies from Hemet got together to form a Hemet Special race. It started out with five guys, but little by little it' grew into an eight man race. Steve' Griffith was the victor by a lon~ way each moto , but because he wasn't one of the original five. he wasn't in contention for the trophy. The trophy went to Paul Scott by majority vote . Paul took two fourths and a third in that order. It was a great opportunity for a group of guys to get some good practice and just goof around. In the 125 class we had enough riders to score the Amateurs and Experts separately, but not enough for two classes. The man about town in this race was Steve Polson . This 15year-old from Hemet is a hot one and a regular winner at Elsinore. The Experts started behind the Amateurs, and moto one the Amateurs did a pretty fair job of holding the Experts off. Charles Carroll took the win rnoto one after a red hot battle with a fellow Amateur, Sam Burnes. Sam had the lead for three laps until Charles Carroll made a mad dash and took control. 'Steve Polson worked his way into second and if he would have had one more lap, Steve probably would have had the pot o'gold. Polson was quite a contender the second time out. Steve knew he waited too long the previous race so he wasted no time this moto. From beginning to end Steve had this one in the bag. Both Steves were secure in their positions, but again Charles and Sam Burnes were involved in a duel. And Charles came out on top. I don't know if Steve Polson's leathers had anything to do with his fantastic racing, but maybe they still have some magic in them from their previous owner. Steve Fortune wore those leathers to number one, and the way Steve Polson looked, he could do as good. Polson again took the checkered with Griffith following in second. ' Sam Burnes beat Charles out of the third but Carroll took the first Amateur trophy. Steve Polson was the no-surprise winner of the Expert trophy. • Sprockets Park By Cosmic Cat & CO. BAKERSFIELD, CAL., NOV . 20 A well prepared track took its toll of riders here at Sprockets Park in Bakersfield. T he track was a lot fast er than m ost D-35 riders are accustomed to so the wrecks were plentiful, especially the first tum. In the 500cc Junior heat for example, Harry Bouadkian (Suz) went down in turn one while running third an d immediately a mass pileup was in effect. Six bikes littered the track but the accident looked worse than it was with no riders being seriously hurt. Craig Johnson (Yam) won the more . cautious main event with Paul Shafer (Yam) and Joe Schmidt (Suz) following. . Brett Butterfield (Yam) took a narrow victory in the 125cc Junior run over a fast closing Jay Bales (Yam). Bales got a poor start but started hooking up mid-way through tJ:te main and worked his way up to second but ran out of laps in his try for Butterfield's position. Jim Rockwell (Yam) finished third. In the 500cc Novices , Kent Canady (Yam) did the job by powering for the top honors over Greg Johnson (Suz) and Fred Berger (Yam). In other races, John Bales (Yam) brought home the Mini Junior iron despite some hard and fast riding by Ritchie Morris (Yam) and Frank Minatta. And Frankie Adamo (Yam) cruised to the 250cc laurels by a considerable distance over top D-35 hot shoes Scott Dinkins (Suz) and Steve Monger (Yam). Ken McCoy (Hon) dusted the 125cc Novices while Ronnie Peterson (Yam) did likewise to the 100cc Novices . •
