Mike Hi sh iki, an Am eri can Honda test ride r. used a new Honda MTI 25R to be at th e TAI25 Yamaha of Jeff Steele at the last turn of the last lap , Before the race. Steele ha d loudly stated that he did not think H ishiki co ul d stand the pressur e of being passed . and tha t Hishiki's ret ir em ent at Willow Sp rin gs two weeks ago was due to a bruised ego a t being pa ssed by Steel e. not du e to a seized mot or. But in th is race. when Hishiki clea nly stuffed it inside Steele' an th e ent ra nce of a tig ht righ t ha nder within sight of th e waving checkered flag . Steele immediately crashed a nd slid int o the di rt outside the track. Steele did manage to push ac ross the line for seco nd . His hiki rode back to m ak e sure Steele was OK . Emde disappears twice David Emde dom ina ted 250cc a nd O pen GP events. as ex pected. H is lead in O pen was especially staggeri ng . aft er Mike Baeder had led int o th e first turn on the bike Takazum i Kat a yama rode a t Riverside . Emde rode his Don Vesco T Z750 past t he field and into a giant 300 -yard lea d by th e end of the first la p . In 250 GP . Em de was ju st "gone" by th e end of the first lap . The racin g was for seco nd , with Mike Ba eder, H arry Klinzrnann , an d Wes Cooley. J r. a ll going a t it on thei r Ma ck Kamb ayash i Yamaha TZ250s. All th ree led at one tim e or anot her . with Klin zmann a nd Baeder flying around Turn 18 side by side on th e last la p . They ga ssed it up to Turn 19 . (the last turn). a nd Baeder slammed th e door on Klin zmann for second place . Cooley was fou rt h . Dick Full er fifth .
