Pat Sidenberg ISull, VALENCIA , CAL. , NOV . 21 The CRC racing organization got together with the Indian Dunes racing facility in Valencia to get down some heavy Sunday morning racing. The racers today were going for a. $1000 purse. Such temptarion could n' t be resisted . Dave Taylor showed up today with a very sano looking Yamaha , complete with factory mechanic. Dave didn't waste any time in taking the lead in the Open Pro action as his Yamaha outpowered the competition and took him to a decisive lead at the beginning of the race, a lead he was never to relinquish. After the race was half over, he had built up ia tremendous lead. Tim Lunde" riding his Cole Brothers Maico , came trailing in second, followed by FMF's Ron Turner. The second moto was not going to be as easy as the first moto for Taylor , but after a few laps it was Taylor out in front again, with Bryar Holcomb hot on his tail. Bryar was riding a 77 KTM 400 that had been gold anodized almost everywhere but the tires . Holcomb was constantly hot on Taylor's rear tire, waiting patiently for Taylor to make a mistake so he could pass. But Taylor and his Yamaha performed flawlessly for the rest of the race, keeping their lead from the anxiously waiting Holcomb. In 125 competition today, the first mota saw Gary Denton take his DG sponsored Honda to a clearcut and decisive victory, just sailing away from the competition, without second place finisher and CH Ind. Honda rider Mike Pillar even coming close. In the second moto it was Denton once again flinging his Honda into the lead, with Broc Glover's factory Yamaha hot on his tail , keeping it that way till the third lap, when Bobby Jones took his CH Industry sponsored Honda to third , making it a three way battle for first. But as luck would have it, just as Gary Denton. looked like he had it all wrapped , his, chain broke, leaving him at spectator status. Glover and Jones took first and second .respectively for that moto , but A.M.E. Spillway Park Fifth Annual North Vs. South By Lee Taylor SANTA MARIA, CAL., NOV. 21 Sunday morning, on an old river bed in Santa Maria , the Civil War was fought all over again. Late the night before, soldiers from the South arrived and set up camp. By the time the sun had come up the next morning, the boys were on the line, ready to defend their honor. There were a few differences however, between this war and the one over one hundred year s ago . This year , th e boys camped in modern motels and vans. They had the K and W Chuck wagon loaded with hot dogs and cheeseburgers to feed them and plenty of cold beer. Also , a T .V . set kept them posted on the football game. Instead of muskets, Maico's were firing off the line and rolling Cannons were replaced by A.T.C . 90's. The 125 Pros in their second moto were led by Alan "General Grant" DeLarge and Willy "General Lee" Simons. The race between these two was unbelievablel Willy had a first in his first moto and was really flying, no holds barred to pick up another first. Alan had a seventh and was fighting like crazy to improve his overall position and hold the lead. Alan and Willy were flying off jumps side by side and bouncing through ruts , legs flying. You would swear these two were stuck to their bikes with fly paper. There was a race within a race going on between Willy and Bob Kline that had all the Southerners in absolute frenzy. These two were also fighting for top Pro points and the Number One plate in their class and they were hot on each other's tail throughout both motos. Bob ended his first in second place and was really out to take the first overall from Wilily.
