We are both District 37 ri ders and also property owners in the proximity of the Barstow-Vegas start line off Harvard Road. We will both be there for two specific reasons. 1. To sweep the trails to Vegas in the interest of safety. 2 . To insure that pit riders do not tear up our property or that of our neighbors in the ,!rea . We suggest that you read the following article published in the Los Angeles Times on October 24 , 1976. "A desert protection bill covering 16 million acres of Ca lifornia desert from Death Valley to the Mexican border has been signed into law by P resid en t Ford. Rep . Shirley Pettis (R-Calif.) . said t he measure caIls for the management, use development and prote ction of the public la n d , and includes ' the expenditure of $40 , million between 1977 and 1981. The new law also establishes uniformed rangers in the desert area with authority to carry firearms ." The run to Vegas wiIl not be on th e 1974 course , but on exi sting jeep trails, which mayor may not be legal. If you' think you and you r kids are going to "pit ride" for two days in this area , ana give the environmentalists real "ammunition to complain , please stay home. Ride only on existing trails and roads in the start area. keep your kids under control . and protect our desert. There have been flash floods in the area and the so called "family" or "t ra il" rider does n ot belong out there. If your conscience tells you to ride , so be it. Please be cautious. courteous. and above all legal. If you wish to speak with Coyote or The Old Gray Fox , just look for the familiar yellow Jeep . .
