Whimey Cycle Ranch for the final round or qualifying in the Astrodome GNC local tracks program. The next action for Grand National MX participants in Texas is the State Championship at Rio Bravo. Nov . 13· 14, and then a . lengrhy wait for the Dome race to roll around next March. In roday's races, Dicky Turnbo streaked to a two -class sweep in 125 and ~50 ' Expert, goi ng virtually unopposed aboard a ' Cleburne . Yamaha 125 and L&L Cycle ,250 Husky. Darrell "t he Ba rr el" Hollingsh ead borrowed an RM250 to replace his H usky this timne out, a nd kept , T u rn bo from relaxing. Hollingshead had his own problems .with Mitch Milson for runner-up in the first 250 moto, but Mitch's Husky conked out in the final . moving Den nis Bishop (Hus) and Brian BriggS (Yam) into third and fourth overall. In the 125 Expert race for second. . Clark Willey (Suz) of Plano ,took it with 3-4 finishes. while Austin's Henry Evans (Pen,2-7) collected third . Ft . Worth's Mitch Milson came back strong in Open Expert, winning both heats despite first-round pressure from Jeff Heaston , who stopped off on his way from the West Coast to his home base of Ft . Wayne, Indiana . Also, Da rrell Hol lingshead had pushed Milson hard, but dropped back with a flat . Heaston had the holeshot of the second moto, but the seat flew off his Maicoon the very first jump . He rode the eight laps sta nding and sitt ing ocassio nally on the fr ame to ta ke a sore third overall beh ind Milson (H us) a nd Ga ry Beam (Mai.3· 3). Dwayne Lisen be of Killeen probably has th e world's recor d for finishi ng second, b ut today got I on the gas a little more and won Junior Minibike honors , turning back the heat from Alan Burden and Obie Jones. Senior Min i was ' DNF City for leaders Ga ry ' Gr a ha m , Tony Nielsen, and Frank Tello, but not for Bucky Houston , who kept rolling for 4·1 finishes . Alex Hoover (6·2) and Mark Terry (5-3) picked up second and third . Ronnie Mullen of Cleburne turned giant killer again in both Over 30 motes . leading the field of 250 and Opne bikes on his sane 125 Elsinore, with Waco's Dennis Smith second on a Maico. The IOOcc class again was one of the day 's tightest races. After a furious bout in round one , Ha rry Heinze, Mark Loving. Brent Fletcher. and Joey Billelo took the checkers. In the final moto , it was anybody's race again, and Loving tacked another to his string of class wins, marking 2· 1 over Heinze (1·2), Billelo (4-3). and Fletcher (3·4) . The 125 Novices trailed Terrell J ackson (Suz) all d ay, exce pt for Ch uck T a ylor ( Pen) , who passed J ackson to winthc second rnoto, but whose 3·1 placed him second to Terrell's 1·2. After taking sixth overall in 125 Intermediate , Mark Elliott 'of Temple hopped on a 400 Pent on and won the first Open Int erm ed ia te moto, but was upset by Bret Com bs (Hus) in the ' second round for the class win, while Kevin Gee (Bul) and Ok ie Robe rt , Fillm ore (Pen) were third and fourth both times. Turnbo added tha t La ke Whitney has an AMA 500cc Nationa l scheduled for June '77 . • Results in Results Section. Okies Invade Mosier Valley By David Nielsen ARLINGTON, TX .. OCT. 17 In search of a good race place , a nd hoping to come ou t on top of a friendly (so far) interstate rivalry , a n umber of dudes from north of the OK /TX border tru cked straight into Mosier Valley MX Pa rk's third-Sunday bash. headed by No . I Ok ie Trey Jorski a nd his stable of D&B Pen tons. The m ild weat her and good - t rack p repping kept traction high , dust down, andact ion ha t a nd heavy for over 360 entries, with the a rea's top professiona ls a nd amateu rs on hand. It was also th e last points run for local Gra nd Nationa l Ch am pionsh ip mem be rs to qu alify for the March '77 Fina ls at t he Astrodome . About a jillion 125 Novices ran in two groups. A wild Division I second moto saw three of the first four finishers from rnoto one drop out, and . overall first going to JoJoAlfano (H on . 3·3) . followed by Joe Sch roeder (Suz, 9·1) and Tom J ohnson (Suz ,6·6). More consistently fast were Div. II leaders David Greenhill (Hus) and Jimmy Whitten (Yam). two ridersto look for at the GNC runoffs next month. The furious, frantic , WFO Int e rmed ia te and Expert races got underway with the 125 Intermediates - 36 of them . Irving Suzuki's Randy Marshall made his ho leshot stick in the first moto , closely tra iled by Bruce , Hallma rk, J ackie Willis , and David J ones, but the fin al was another story. Hallmark and his Martin Honda dusted th e field all the way, a nd a WiIlis·Jo nes dead lock battle for second went on until the last lap when nei the r rider' appea red a t the finis h. Their inte nsity pu t the m both in th e boonies, and fourth- running Marshall was suddenly seco nd at the line and overall. As the standings unscrambled, David Walker (Hon , 11·3) ,took third , and Ga ry Ha r rison (Yam) fourth. Mike J ones spent the first half of 1976 racing all the 125 Nationals, finishing in the to p ten many times in the 45 -mimite motos . Along with his Moto-Tex FMF Honda , Mike has to be among the top Texas 125 Experts. In today's motos, Jones blew by everyone. including Trey Jorski (Pen), and maintained a torrid . pace for a convincing win over 20 riders . Following in the standings were Jorski (2·3). Dave Boles (H us, 4·5) , Danny Doss (Hon, 5·7), Jones' Moto-Tex teammate Jimmy Martin (12·2) . • The 25 Expert class was again dominated by Penton of Dallas riders Bob by Pickard and Ricky Kid d . Jorski ranked th ird in the ru n ning unt il Kidd slowed from his early lead with a flat rear tire. Then it was Pi ck a llthe way with the ' overall, even tho ugh Kidd .carn e back after a nin th to win th e final and fift he OA. Jorski (2·4) ended seco nd, Dickey Nowell (Pe n, 4-3) thi rd , and surp rising Mark Pledger (3 · 5) completed th e Penton parade. which a lso marched t hrough the Open class wit h Kidd and J orski in control. Wyman Priddyhad been present and cha rging , but both of his well-used Bultacos failed to finish either the 250 ro Open classes. • Results in the Results Section .
