Eric Burney took sec ond , with Pritch ett third . At fourth. Dennis Radley (370 . Suz ) got a class vict ory . As per . usu al p ra ct ice , Leslie Klu g (250 Hon) was the first Powder Puff to fin ish , Leslie is an Am a te ur , so th e Novice cla ss went to Chris Wallace (Suz). Leo Blomgren (360 Hus) won the Senior Novice class, just ahead of ' four riders knotted so closely that onehundredths of a second will dec id e the _ o rder . Hare RED MOUNTAIN , CAL. , OCT. 31 The Rams' 27th Annual H /H started off at th e usual 9:00 a.m . for most riders . The time change did fool a few and those folks had to play ca tch- u p all day. T ommy Brooks m ust have set "his clock on time because he was first to the bomb a nd had a goodrhree minute lead over Mi tch Ma yes at the pits. However bike problems put h im out at the end ofthe first loop. . A little about the course - the slightly uphill bomb run ' wa s pretty choppy in some sections due to rec ent heavy rai ns in th e area . Fortunately, ., no serious ge t-offs were ' reported . Once past the bomb the ri ders picked up th e course and headed into a canyon where there. was still plenty of il< room for passing, provided your radar I vision 'saw through the dust . While everyone was still climbing up into the first check so soon. There was some o talk at the finish lin e about this check being missed by a number of riders so we'll have to wait a nd see if the results at the en d of this article are even clos e. After check on e the course ran through th e hills where the curious folks back in t he pits could see their heros fighting for positions in the .d ista nce . A big sandy downhill was the only way ou t of th is sectio n of the loop for all the riders with the excep tio n of the Beginners , who were routed around (A flying check was there to keep everyone honesr.) .After the down hill , yo u still had anothe r 20 m iles to go - wh ich con sisted of pretty flat . wide -open -desert (you on ly imagined those rocks). The course the n tu rned , b ack away from Navy Road an d he aded to the pi ts via a -big sa nd wash . . The second loo p (rem em ber , this on e was a hare and hound) took the riders back down the road through -the camping area , givi ng all those stuck at ca mp a ch ance to see some ra cing for a change, and ou t across Trona Road . Sh ortly after th e ro ad crossing (o ne of three) the co u rse dropped into a super fas t flat uphill sa nd wash wh ich was re all y somethi ng . Since there were no rocks , it was like riding five mil es of smoot h asphalt. After th e sa ndw ash, th e riders traversed through rolling hill s, three railroad tunnels a nd ba ck down the road crossing by the railro ad tracks into th e fini sh. . Mi tch Mayes (Hus) was fir st to th e checke re d today, just o ne hour a nd 4 1 m inutes after the banner was dropped . La rry Roeseler (H us) looked like his shadow - it was really close . Thir d ove ra ll was heavyweight expert Mo rgan Mal occo . Bruce Ogilvie (Ha r) cam e in next as fou rt h ove ra ll a nd first ~5 0 Expert with Jody Belknap (Hus) right behind for second in class. Sixth overall a nd firs t Divisio n II Expert was An dy Klein with second and third Division II Expert going to Jeff Ka p lan ' (H us) 16t h . overall and Russ ell J enki ns (Yam ) 17t h overall. Eight overall and first Trailbi ke Expert was Ch arlie Hamill wh o . ru m or has it. only needs three m ore to wrap up No.1. Twelve bi kes later a n d seco nd Trailb ike Expert was Mik e Matlock . Dick Camp (Yam) ca me in first Senior at 13th overall even though .he seized in the big sandwash. Smoke Bomb Jr. came in a t 12th overall a n d first 250 Amateur. Bruce Jones came in j ust three riders later . and Tim Fitzpatrick at 21st overall . Heavyweight Ama teurs were Don WaIlingsford a t 14th overall , Dan Thordarson at 28th overall and John Whit e , 36th overall . Bob West had his best 'ride yet in Division II Amateur coming in firs t in cla ss. Trailbike Am ateur gold went to' Gregg Thomas for fi ~t with Allan Harrison jus t two bikes behind . It took Scott Dinger two hours and 15 m in . to get around the . cou ~ and come up with first overall No vice , with Dav e Bird and !-Ioyd Britt rounding out the top three 250 N ovices. Second _ overall No vice and first Heavyweig ht brought in Jim Lawrence . MarkJarrell and Tim Burley weren't too far a way i for seco nd and third : F. rst Division II Novice honors were grabbed by Craig Chaney. Trailbike No vices had a time . but Juan Bendvid er managed to hang in there for a firs t. In ' the Women's' Division, Trudy Beck showed the girls the wa y it was done by fin ishing 50th overall . Debbie Graziano , June Elias and Linda Christianson hung in there to finish 118th. 134th and 189th a nd show the guys that their gals don't give up easy . That about recaps the race' for this weekend - the general opinion of the riders was that the Rams laid out a good , well marked course. ' T he only thing that was a bummer was the dust. Mitch Ma yes received a. p air of those Motorsport Ar Shocks for his overall win . His comment on this ' was. "T h anks , but wha t's Charlie going to say?" • See ya in the Dez .
