Mota One: Lumberjack Burgett
almost does it
Back b efore t ro u ble start ed brewing,
some ra cing took pl ace . C ary Ch aplin
nailed down t he holeshot o f the first 40
m inute plus two lap m o to with h is DC
Suz uki as T o m my Croft, Brad Lackey ,
A d o lf Weil and Ricky Burge tt la tched in
be hi nd . Ro ger DeCoster had tried a hot
in sid e lin e off the sta rt but it on ly
managed t o get bo xed in at the fir st
co rn e r, leavin g him at t he back o f t he
pack. Quickly Ro ger began workin g his
Su zu ki up from 37t h posi t ion and by
th e fi ft h lap into the m o to h e w as
a lready up to fifth pl ace. Ch apl in had
faded back in the pa ck as Bu rgett,
La ckey and Cro ft dented t anks over the
lead. Weil st ill held fo urt h place but was
losing gro und o n De Co ste r as Sylvain
Ge boers see m ed t o come out of
nowhere and latch onto Roger 's rear
fender.
At mid moto Burgett had m anaged to
pull awa y from Croft and Lackey, with
the 'Lumberjack' from Oregon m aking
the rain so aked Rabbit Run t rac k seem
lik e a dry run as everyone "e lse
floundered and bogged in the resu lt of
th ree d ays of rain. Burgett con t in ued to
. pull away with his lead right up u nt il
three laps fro m the ch ec k ered whe n his
ign ition fl ywheel broke off the shaft
and gro u n d him to a halt. Yamaha
te ammate Bob Hannah had experienced
the same problem t wo weeks b efo re.
T h e lea d was tu rned over to Cr o ft
when Burgett w ent o ut, who had built
u p a good lead of his own by now over
Lackey. Brad wa s fall ing prey t o

Geboers
who
freight-trained on b y. /lis so on as they
passed Brad. the tw o Belgians se t their
front fenders o n Croft a nd it wasn 't t oo
long before they were by him as well .
"Sylvain p assed m e abou t three laps
from the end," as Roger wiped the

lapped rider into a rutted turn , I didn' t

slower, but Sy lvai n took it and beat m e

Kent Howerton an d Caylon Mosier had
smoked by. After a bum start in the
first mota Kent was out to give his
home state fans the show t hey had
co m e to see. Wicking up his 3 6 0 Husky,
Kent began stretching the lead out on
C aylon , but it wasn't for long as on the
. fifth lap the ' R hin es t on e Cowboy ' was
left on the side of the track for the
second t ime this series with a b ro ken
cou n te rshaft,
Caylon took command of the lead
with his Maico a nd held in for the n ext
3 0 m inutes as Smith followed in seco n d ,
th en Sernics, Tony D.• Croft , Ge boers,
G ro ssi, Burge tt , Wolsink a nd DeCoster.
Both Oeb oers and DeCost er we re slicin g
their way u p t hrough the p ack at the
same sp eed . There was no way t hat
Ro ge r coul d catch Syl vain, though. Wit h
five minutes remaining in the moto
Mart y Smith cl o sed the gap o n Gaylon
and p assed h im for the lead. Wolsink fell
o ff and lo st a cou p le o f place s. Geboers
had passed Cr o ft, DiStefan o and Se rnics
to be sitting in third as ti m e for the
m oro ra n ou t . Croft co llecte d fourth ,
t h en Se m ics, DiStefano, DeCoster.
G ro ssi, Lackey and Bu rge tt . Sylvain
Geboers -de fin itely proved to be the best
mud ride r th is week as he snared the
ove ra ll wi n ahead o f Croft and
DeCost er.
