OCT. 17 Wayne Rainey, on a pair .of Shell Racing Yamahas, took home honorsin both the 250 and 360 Expert classes against a very for - O"l s.. IlJ ..0 E m idable field . It was the seventh in a scheduled 10 round series of "King of the North." Double white plate points were awarded for Experts. Besides Rainey's 'dou ble header. Doug Chandler alsomade it a double win with the 80 and 100 Expert Mains over Bob Ely in the '80 and Gary johnson in the 100. The first three 80's were torn down for routine inspection and everyone went home with their respective brass but the talk wasn't all . that friendly . _ Rodger Slack looked like the only other man to .be able to stay with Rainey in the 250 Main as the two promptly hooked up from the gi~ 'go. Coming down the front chute on the 'first lap, in close formation, were Slack on the Carruthers built Yamaha , Brian Thompson on his Orlando Yam a ha . Brian Thompson on his O rlando Yamaha', Little Eddie Conzales on a Sonny Kenyon Bul taco and R ainey overhauling th ose two . The Shell Racing special d id th e tri ck down the back straight to Go nza les a nd Thompson with Mark Murray pulling into third ' and Rick Delacy passing Don Bailey for fourth . Slack and Rainey were one for three mo re laps wh ile the rest of th e troops excha nged spots. Delacy got Mu rray wh ile Da ve Faria and Ba iley swapped it around for awhile. Donny got tired of the whol e mess and rode his BOSS framed Yamaha away 'fro m Faria, then got both Murray and Delacy. in a super dive into turn one. Russ Luhdorff was willed an old 350 XL by big brother Scott and has , been the scou~e since. The kid weighs about 95 pounds and is' now the leader of the 360 Novice portion of th e " King" series. Mark Jensen came out of semi -retirement for a good old second place and lots of hoopla from some lovely ladies while Mike Galbraith took a well deserved th ird and for a 20 year old with 19 years in the AMA, that ain't bad . . The 360 Expert was to be th e ' b iggee of the two d ay affair with 26 points up for grabs and quite a few dollars to boot. Heat winners had been Jim Mertens , Rainey , Dan Hogue and Rodger Slack. . A ra ther ragged start put Slack in the lead with Second row starter Mike Delacy and Hogue just a tad over Rick Delacy who had lots of points in his head. Going down the back straight Mike Delacy took the lead. Mike was firmly in control with Slack moving .~o eventual retirement while Hogue moved the Dan Thuett Yamaha to second and Rainey played catchup, , passi~g Mertens on the second lap. Rainey finally got by the ragged riding Hogue on the fifth lap and challenged Delacy .for two laps. Mertens went to pass Hogue two different times but the big man would be changing lin es every 10 feet in a corner while Brother Rick was finally getting everything together and also moved up. Mertens made the move two laps from the end and despite getting a bump job , held the pass . Going down the back leg on the white flag. Rainey put it all away. • IlJ ;> o Z ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-----------------~~-----~1 1st week's results based on ballot mail ins - these are not final Malc olm Smith Roger D eCo ste r Cart Cranke Kenny Roberts D ick Mann J im Fishback J.JY Sp ri ngst e e n Ja ck Penton B ra d La ckey Dick Burleson .
