J immy Martin (2-7) had second moto problems but still fin ished the da y in fourth. 2 50 Expert Ricky Kidd (KT M) looked like a sure contender for the weekend overall victory bu t a crash at the sta rt o f the lust moto put him out o f contention for the rest of the day . . Gary Well s (Hon) took the class win followed by Roger Brown (C-A) who had to overcome poor st arts both motos but still sliced his w ay through the p ack to place a strong 3-2 second overall finis hjng. Barry Duncan (C-A) 1-5 had an excellent lust moto p erformance spoiled by second moto problems to fade into third with Bart Batson (KTM) claiming fourth. The Open Expert class hit the first turn in a fast and furious pace with Bobby Guidry (Bul) out front followed closely by Oliver Rutledge (Hus), Ricky Kidd (KTM) , and Roger Brown (KTM). Guidry began pulling away as Kidd and Brown battled for se cond leaving Rutledge in fourth. Brown put on a strong losing performance that carried him past both Kidd and Guidry into first place as the moto ended. Guidry pulled the holeshot of the second moto with Brown 'cl ose behind as Kidd found himself stuck in traffic. Brown w as closing fast on Guidry for the lead and the overall weekend victory only to have his rear wheel start unlacing its spokes, sending him to the pits and leaving the victory to Guidry. Ricky Kidd (3-5) held on to collect second place cash with Randy Hammond (5-4) edging Brown (1-9) for third. The last an d best race of the day was a special winner-take-all jackpot race con sisting of six laps for $156.50, eligible to any Expert who wanted to race. Surprisingly , only four riders showed up to race : Gary Wells, Roger Brown, Dave Taylor and Bobby Guidry. Guidry grabbed an early lead only to break down putting Wells in the lead. Wells was on his way to victory when Brown put ona final charge that put him on Wells' back fender as the pair entered the final straightaway. Both riders hit the finish line jump with Wells putting o n a classic cross up as Brown sailed past him , in mid-air to win the race and $156.50. Raising his arms in -victo ry , Brown crashed headon into a trackside tree, sending both bike and rider into a spectacular endo . Dazed but unhurt, Brown em erged top winner of the day .
