Sh ir ey , riding a Dick Allen-sponsored 400 Yamaha, too k the lead at the start with Rich Thorwald son (3 70 Suz ) in second. Steve Ra wson (400 KT M) overtook Thorwalds on on t he second tour o f the seven -mile ·co urse , then cau ght Shi rey on the ne xt lap in th e m otocross co urse . Behind the leadin g d uo , Breker was m ovin g up. Fro m ' fifth, he go t by Dan D awson, wh o c ra s hed, . a nd T h o rwal ds on . Lon Peterson (4 0 0 Yam ) was next, with Tom Kelly (25 0 KThI ) and Bob Balentine (4 00 KTM ) beh ind him. On the fifth loop , Rawson, who ca m e to the Dunes exp ect in g a re gular motocross, ra n o u t of gas. Shirey aga in took over the lead , with Bre ker , Peterson and Kelly b ehind h im. Rawson fin ally go t so me gas an d came throu gh in seventh. On th e seven th lo op, Sh irey pitted . . Breker flashed by to tak e the lead, wh ich h e stre tc he d ou t on the rema in ing two loops. Peterson almost . got by Sh irey, on ly to fall in a comer while right behin d him . Balenti ne finally figured out the co urse. Running lIth m id way throu gh the first loop , he'd m o ved up as others dropped out. In th e last few laps he pi cked up the p ace , p assin g Kell y (w ho b ro ke a chain soon a ft erwar d) , Pet erson and fm ishing the race about a hundred feet behind Shirey. Peterson, who a lso hasn't been doing too much racing, took fo urt h . Rawson was in next, having moved up when Kelly and Thorwaldson dropped out. Doug Win ch ell, who wasn't sure he w as goin g to ra ce earlier in the day, took sixth on a 250 Suzuki, first in 'class. Phil Stumbo (250 CZ) cr ashed several times when the narrow tire he was using knifed in the sandy comers. He stilI finished seventh. Jim Artz (400 Yam) took eighth and sixth · in class. Ninth, and the last one to go nine loops, was Gary Charters, Sr., who won the small-bore class on a 100 Suzuki. Allen Meek (175 KTM) rounded out the top ten, moving up from seventh among small-bores and finally finishing a race aft er a streak of DNFs. . The Amateur start was chaos as the riders fan ne d do wn th e san d was h and go t to the first tight t urn. Out of the co n fu sion , Kenny Upp (125 Yam) took the lead, but J im Dawson (4 00 Yam) passed quickly. He stayed in front , winning handily over Gary Davies (4 00 Yam) and Doug Heil (25 0 Su z). Finishing fo urt h , Upp to ok th e ~ sm all-b o re win. Man y o f th e Powder Puffs rode in cost u me, the day bein g, Halloween. Leslie K1ug, ridin g as an Indian , took ,fifth overall an d first Powder Puff. Midw ay throu gh the Open Novice race, it was annou nc ed th at th e leader , Wayne Allen , ha d been disqualified for riding o ut of class, sin ce he held a D-3 5 Expert ca rd . The win thus went to Brad Mc l.e od (37 0 Bul), who moved up throughout t he race. Tom Maddo c ks (4 00 Yam) had been in th e lead; he took sec on d, with Mark Fo rce third. In th e firs t race of t he day, the Q-200/:\lini Beginner event, racers no t use d to a banner st art took off wh en somebo d y waved a re d flag. They were returned to the line, st art ed properly an d led to t he fmish by Dan Lefebvre (Suz) an d Ch ris Lynn (Yam) . J e ff Spencer (Han) was th e firs t Mini across the line. The seven-mi le course utilized . serveral new trails devel oped especially for th e race. The cou rse was ti ght , twisty , a nd in th e hills , extrem ely dusty . On e silty hill near' the st art fo u nd riders sometimes wa iti ng at t he bottom until t he bottlen eck unsnarled itsel f. Rider co mmen ts on th e co urs e depended on how th e rider did in the race. There were lots of fall s in the soft turns, bu t • o nly t wo injuries all day. Results in Results Sec ti on .
