Am ericans dominated bo th motos as
Husqvarna's Kent Howerton won t he
sec on d mota with convincing st yle in
axle deep mud, but for the second week
in a row DeCoster came out on top o f a
tie for first overall, clinching his fo urth
Trans-MIA of the Series and bring his
Trans-AMA race win total over the p ast
years to 18.
The game w as called on acc ou nt of
mud during the second mota of the
250cc Support class, so it wa s th e first
m ota results that a dded up for the
overall win as well . In that first mota,
Can-Am 's new team member Bobby
Harris slid ahead of a mired down pack
of riders to take the win ah ead of Steve
Wise o n Su zuki and Denny Swartz, also
Suzuki mo unted.
Moto One:
The course was shortened even more
before the first 500cc In ternati onal
mota when half the Support cl ass riders
got stuck in one sec tion o f the track.
Billy "Sugar Bear" Grossi powered his
400 RM wo rks Suzuki to the lead ahea d
of Lackey , Howerton , Geboers, Weil,
Wein ert, DeCoster an d Wolsink. Left
stuck in th e first tum buried knee deep
in mud w ere Marty Smith and Don
Kudalski. On the second lap Grossi
st aged the first of many sp ect acular
getoffs wh ich would wow the cro w d,
and turned the lead over to Lac ke y.
Brad kept his Husky in the lead for two
laps, then bailed off himself and gave it
to Ho werto n. Kent didn't want to be
greedy either, and on the eighth lap
plopped ove r in a berm .
With Kent left far behind the battle
for the lead was turned over to Weinert,
Geboers and DeCoster. By this point
everyone had pulled off their goggles
because they had become too muddy to
see thro ugh. Still, for a rider trying to
