At ti mes, Todd found the better lines to ca mp on Firestine's rear circular. Then , just when it appeared that Todd would pass , Firestine would squirt ahead to a safer d ist an ce . Mea nwhile , Craig and Loeffler were doing battle in ab o ut the mi ddle of t he pack. Firesti ne pulled up a little on Rice, b ut that was t he order fo r t he first m oto. The second mota saw J ay Rice do it again off t he line. He h ad th e lead and . held it while Todd and Firestine again did battle . Mike Meyer (H us) was t he story of the second mota . After a poor start, Meyer char ged t hro ugh the pack and passed some mighty important Rocky Mountain MXers to actually pass the likes of Todd and Fir estine to finish second behind Rice . What a ride ! It was Jay Rice, though, who was acclaimed number one this da y and well deserved it wa s for the young man from Aurora, Colorado. The Support race was the big bores. Open A class and so me pre t ty fancy riding was turned in by J. Saran off (Mai) with hands-off-the-handlebar techniq ues over the fast downhill jumps and all that. It can really be valuable when t he engine is dead during its fall instead of ru nning wi de open. 111e lightweight classes ran on the left side of the hill , which was n o t quite as steep as the left. Mark Scholz on a 250 Bult aco set the fastest time on this side with 6 : 30 sec o nds ov er. This was his second win of the day. Mark was the only 125 to see the top of the hill when he worked his 125 RM Suzuki over in 8 :27 se conds. Quite a few of the riders had their bikes for sale, an indication that winter is on the way. Ron Roseburg on a 500 Yankee was one of these riders and he was su ccessfu l. By the time he cam e to the line for his second try the bike was sold a nd just to clinch the deal he captured third place with a time of 7 :.7 se co nds.
