Wright EL PASO , TEX., OCT. 10 Ken J ohnson took over man agemen t of Borderland Motocross Park and held his first race October 10th with a ' $500 pu rse. Mr. Johnson laid out a n all new, challenging t ra c k and ra n a very good show - trying to p lease both spectators an d riders. A lo t of Experts t urned out an d provide d some very fine racing. In th e Open Ex pert, Pe t e Tanner, who has been out of racing for five m onths with a b ro ken leg, m ade a co meback an d ra n a strong fifth u ntil he p u lled off becau se of p ain in his leg. Of the 18 bikes in t he 250 Novice class, six were old silver-tanked Elsinores with a co uple . of them cra c kin g the top five or six in ea ch moto. The eventual third overall rider , Mark Hrn cir, won the third m o t o on one. It just go es to prove that you don't have to own the lat est trick equipment to get out there a nd ride . A lit t le desire can go a long way to overcoming motorcycle deficiencies, whether real o r imagined. . T he first o f m an y kegs, supplie d by D& L Suz uki, was tapped righ t a fte r the last Am at eu r m oto w as over a nd everyone laid back on the hill , suds in hand, to ' wat ch a fine Expert fiel d d u ke it ou t ove r a $ 75 0 pu rse. In what turned ou t to b e th e m ost thrilling finish of the d ay , David DiCo rte za p ped Mike Malone y b y n o m or e th an a n in ch a t the finish . T he n, com ing through that last off ca m ber co mer onto th e fro n t straight, DiC orte ap plied 110% t h ro ttle and pulled even wit h Malon ey as they ro c ket ed as one bike towards the finish. As the checkers broke the air everyone loo ked at ' one another in amazement. They wo u ld have cheered but di dn 't know who to cheer for. The announcer called Malo ney the victor b u t the scorers, w ho were rig ht down near the track, saw it diffe re ntly. Until the scorers gave t he wo rd , no o ne was sure . It was close! Maloney again had the lead ea rly in the secon d mot o but DiCorte was in second , qu ickly mo ve d to the fro nt, and w ent on to vict o ry. T he 125 Ex pert s fired up as those on th e hill w ere pro ceeding t o get soused an d enjoy the excit em en t o f Exp ert racing . T he favori t es o n th e line had to be Mel Newman on a Suzuki fr om San An gel o , Dicky Turnbo on a Yamaha from Lake Whitney and David Daniels on a Yamaha from New Braunfels, and various ge ntle m anly bets were being bantied a bo ut as the rubber band sn apped a n d the pack, led by Austinite Bo bb y Bullock roared to t um one . Newman was in third and quickly worked h is wa y into the lead, but Turnbo an d Daniels were ' not faring as we ll back in th e pack. Every one wait ed fo r th e paten t ed T u rnbo bla ze t hrough the pack bu t it never ca m e. Dicky struggled up to fi ft h an d the re he stayed. Newman agai n took the lead in the second m oto and cruised to overal l victory as Turnbo DNF'd. Henry Evans had to work hi s Penton har d in the second moto to move u p to t h ir d a nd finish second overall. Mel Newman (Su z) and Dic ky Turnbo (Hus) were at it again in the 250 class, swapping firs ts a nd seconds , b ut Turnbo took th e overall win with a solid second moto victory. The first Annual Crested Butte Mountain Enduro (or the perils of .Pearl Pass) By Do n Cleary CRESTED BUTTE, CO. , SEPT . 26 On ly abou t 90 hearty enduro riders p rep ared themselves Sunday mo rni ng for a co mbination mud , snow, sleet, and rain-filled d ay. Many riders, including Doug Drussel (R o k ), shared a p re-enduro fight of a Monarch Pass snowstorm enroute fro m Gar den Cit y , Kansas. _ The fun started with a ru n u p Cr est ed Butte Mountain, snaking up u nder th e ski lifts. So m e com m ented that the li fts should have bee n runnin g. Afte r crossing t he icy r iver a nd subsequ ent mud bank before check n umber three, a few riders didn't even b other with Pearl Pass . The o n es that di d p ro bab ly we re a bit sorry. Almost two fee t of the fluffy white stuff capped lo vely Pea rl. With id ea l co n di t ions, Pearl Pass is never kno wn as a joy ride, a nd wi th th is wh ite b lanket it was d efintely a "boggy boo."
