Back to timekeepers People have become so good with all the trick stuff on the handlebars that, in an attempt to cut down -on the low numbers, endures have been turned into tough desert ra ces. . On the Tuff E'Nuff I doubt if very many people ever 100 ked at their watches. I have been riding endures for 20 years, and I'm a long wa ys from the best , bu t I d idn 't get to be an A rider without knowing so met h ing ab o ut how to ride. On the C loop of t he Tuff E'Nuff I lost n ine points. Believe me, Y u didn 't have to keep t im e. i The California 100 has to be one of the best I have ridden in a long t ime, b u t the y had t o ruin it by u sing a speedometer th at was way off on t he first loop. I gu ess they did it to make the run more challen ging but it didn 't m ak e any sense a nd I think they sho uld have thrown the whole fir st loop out. The rule book say s chec ks must be accurate within plus or m inus one tenth o f a mile. I always assumed this would be checked with an accurate speedometer if it was challenged . If the ro u te card says go 10 .3 miles at 18 miles per hour, I assume that is what it m eans and I ride accor dingly. If we are going to make th e endures challenging let's be re al professional and ju st don't hand out ro ute sheets. Make us use our heads! That is what is supposed to m ake t hese runs different 1 from other events. I know if you took it to the Supreme Court they would say you can't do that, becaus e you are discriminating against the d ummies, but so wh at .
