" Windham blows them off By Andi Gangewer ELSINORE, CAL., OCT. 2 When 'the Onen Nov ice Main event final ly rolled around, Joel Windham was ready to take on the best of them. Windham got the ju mp off t he line but he had quite a ti me ho lding off Bob Ke llam, and Orlando Lamboy. Orlando was third behind Po llack and on the final lap, coming out of the esses, Lamboy bit the dirt and Bob Kellam used it to ' his best advantage. Kellam grabbed second awayfrom Wayne and Windham and picked up the two Open Novice trophies. The 100-125 Amateurs and Experts were run together with the Amateurs starting out front of the Experts. Mark Ledbetter and Steve Griffith fought it out all three races, but Griffith took the three wins. Ledbetter was second and speedway riders Spike Shelton followed in for third. , Randy Bird, at one time a winning regular at Elsinore, was back to try his hand in the 250 Expert class and he ended up with a royal flush. Amateurs rode with the Experts and got a handicapped start, but Randy, Joe Steffen and Gary Smith quickly moved , to the head of the pack and finished 1-2-3 . Brad Oxley led the 250s around for the beginning of the race until Randy Bird flew by and stole t h e show. Oxley and Gary Smit h were wheel to wheel when Gary ja m med by t o follow Bird to second. CORONA, CAL., SEPT. 31 Goat Breker upheld the family honor this week with Bryan's absence but Goat gave himself a ' rough way to go by riding his brother's KX400 instead of his own 250 . It didn't seem to slow him down any as he collected the bucks in the Open Expert class over Tom McMichael. Tom broke up Goat's possible grand-slam when he got h is Maico out in fran t in the third mota and Goat had all kinds of problems. Whatever was ailing t he Dallas Baker Kaw was remedi ed by t he Team Race but again the t radition was almost shattered when Steve Castle and his partner won the race b ut lost it because they didn't make the p art n er change when they were suppose to, so again it was the Breker brothers team. Jim Latendresse 'seems to have gotten his bike legs back as he won the dough in the 250cc Expert with a 1-1-1 over J oe Reed. Clifford Mathews, riding out of C.H . Motorcycles in Rive rside, proved that his transfer to Novice was no fluke as he swept the 250cc class on his smooth running Can -Am. Not only did he beat Greg Guinn and Charlie Guinn, the two, three riders, but he also beat Rick Tolson, the Buddha Bultaco rider and winner of the Intermediate Division over John Friesen (and they started ahead of him). Intermediate class, here he comes! . Doug Payne started out good i~ the 250cc Novice class, with a win in the first mota over T.D. Walker and 'Lo y Beach. Unfortunately for Doug, T.D. and Loy came back to take the next tw o m o t o s one, two, with the same .or der for the overall dropping Doug to third. Steve Feld started t he evening with a fourth in the 125cc In t ermed iat e b ut stru ng together two firsts to tie with Steve Castle wh o had three seconds to his credit. The' no d we nt to Mr. Feld because he had th e higher p lace finish in the final m ota. David J on es, riding for Dese rt Mo t o rcycle Supp ly, ro unded o ut the field wi t h th ir d . Randy Shoaf and Mark G uteblier we re a ll tied up with four points each when the third mota of 125cc Beginners rolled around. Randy had everything together and bro ught it home first overall. Mark with his, fourth place finish could do no better than third , while Tony Feldhaus came up with the second. The Mini Division saw Donny Berry sans the problems that have plagued him his last few outings sock it to the rest of the class. The tough co m p et ito r in the soft package, Jill McIlrath, held off Gordon Ward to take the second -spot by one point. • Results in Results Section.
