Night Racing By Lee Tay lor VALENClA,CAL.,OCT.15 The 125 Pros had a screaming crowd on their hands Friday and a do or die race between Willy Simons and Bobby Kline. Bobby II: UJ ~ a II: I- ~ (Above ) Team DG at CMC Saddle back - Den ton and Taylor ..., 'n uff said, (below) Gripsten rally at Elsinore CMC ~X; Tyer, Bell & Holcomb By Patti Trotter IRVING, CAL., Ocr.17 ~ Almost 300 riders came to Saddleback today and were surprised by the Robert Bosch Spark Plug people. Bosch was 14 giving away all kinds of super things to the riders and the holders of CMC licenses. The first three finishers in each mota were awarded either a chest protector or T-shirts. Non-riders just had to show their license at the Bosch display and th ey could have a brand new spark plug. Bosch is planning a big day in J an uary when wil1 they wiU be offering $3,000 worth of prizes. As the racing got started the Open Pro 's had the first place on the agenda for today. Mark Rodman (Yam), Bryar Holcomb (KTM) and FMF rider Ron Turner got out in front of the other 18 riders and absolutely ' do minate d the moto. The second mota had Rodman get going first followed by Holcomb. Turner, and Steve Russell (Mai). Holcomb moved up and took the lead away from Rodman to finish the mota in first place. Second and third place finishers were Rodman and Turner. These three got the payback. In the first 250 mota Radical Ron Turner got the holeshot and was followed by Mike Bell (DG) Warren Reid (FMF) John Smith Bill Rubly (FMF) and the flash himself - Jeff Vidic (Mai). Things stayed the same for a few laps and then Bell Blasted past . Turner. and Vidic started working on a better posit ion . Reid opened up his "Flying Machine" to get around Turner and made an assault on Bell. Suddenly it was Reid, Bell, Turner and Vidic. In the second moto Mike Bell got one of his outrageous h oleshots and held on to the lead for the en tire mota. As the m o ta closed the lead ers were Bell , Reid. Vidic and Smith. There were 27 ri ders in the 250 class so the payback was very good. Gary Denton was in the lead at the start of 125 action. David Taylor (DG). Mark Tyer (MM) and Tony Wanket (FMF) were hot on his knobby. After a few laps Gary was out of contention with major mechanical problems and surrendered the lead to Taylor who held had a bad spill in his first moto that left him shaken up with a bad arm, and to ad d insult to injury, a DN F in his first ma i o . But it didn't stop him fro m co ming back in his second mota. read y to take on the whole race, and that he did. With his crony. Bob by Jones, ridin the 250 Pro, it left Bobby, Willy Simo ns and Jack Miller as his top contenders. lt was to uch and go as they wo uld go into the turns side by side, pass each other briefly. then back again with sometimes. less than a bike's distance between them. This continued for the whole second mota with Jack Miller and Mark Aney trying ' their darndest to cat ch them. Just before the white flag Kline got past Simons again and managed to hold him off for the last lap. The ch eckered flag found WiI1y bringing home fITSt, Jack Miller second, and third going to Mark Aney, The 250 Intermediates obviously thought they were Pros. The whole field was fast and furious and had the fan s going craz y. In particular. the feud between Richard Cavish and Ben Schillaci. In th e sceo moto Ben took the lead over Richard who had won his first moto. Ben, having a fifth in the first, was riding his heart out to hold off Rick and improve his overall position. He held out as lon g as he could but Rick eventually go t by and captured the checkered flag for a first overall. Ben hung in there and brought home a well-deserved third overall with second going to Kevin Kratz. Kevin, who had a second in his first mota had a super ride, pushing Rick all the way. • Results in Res ults Section . n Scrambles- . Gripsters MC By Maureen Lee ELSINORE, CAL. ocr. 17 Francis Petty had to practically bully the rest of the Gripsters to go along with his idea of using a different version of the Elsinore track - but finally he convinced them and was it ever neat! The riders who" rode it loved it. Approaching the jump the track hing a right through an ' opening in the fence, wound around the upper parking lot a bit and then rejoined the original first turn but with an opportunity to really get it on before you hit the top of the. hill. Scott Polson emerged the leader of the 250 Novices while Greg Zehner and Chris Cloisser shuffled places behind him with Dave Cote to finish in the top five. On the last round flagman Carl . Pfet zin g, who was displaying the white flag suddenly resembled a torero doing fa ncy capework as Pol son belted around th e. turn st raight at h im; Carl ha d to really suck it in! Steve Loomis (Yam) got off real hard in the last 250 Junior mota but still ended up second overall, while Joe Steffan Blew 'em off, especially second time au t. Bultaco rider Gary Smith ended third and Dorothy Rowe (Yam) fourth, although on a tackier track the
