As this was the beginning of the BOSS !\IX "Winter Schedule" all Novice races were ron in the morning, and Intermediates and Experts ran both their motos in the afternoon. Between the Novice and Intermediate-Expert portions of the program ; there "!3-s a very special race. In this one the members of the Patrol got a chance to show off their abilities. They advertise "Motorcyclists Helping Motorcyclists" and got out their bikes .to prove they are motorcyclists! Three MX bikes, a Mini bike, an Enduro bike, and quite a few with headlights, license plates and all took to the track. Three MX racers seemed to be leading the pack, and trailing the pack was a gorilla! (That's right!) Apparently the referee didn't care to approach hi m about the necessit y of wearing a hel met, bu t he/she/it di d wear goggle s. As Motocross rules cann ot co mfortably be ap plied t o gorillas, t his on e did a lot o f course cutting an d was first to take the checke red flag. Wit h so m an y of the First Aid p eop le ri ding in the race , it would se em a bad ti me for o ne o f them to go down , b u t Doctor Al Bau mann, favored io wi n , had to try it. His crash set h im back quit e a b it in finish position. Bob Put n ey , als o a real racer, w as th e fir st to fin ish after the gorilla. With two clean sweep exceptions, the m o rn ing's Novice racing p roved that one sh ou ld n ever take this sport for granted. In the second Divisio n of 125 Novice, Glen n Ree d (Suz) won both motos, and in the Open class Wayne Brittain (Mai) did the same. But - in the first Division of 125's Albert Griego (Suz) and Gayland Norton (Hon) had the two wins, but rust overall went to Mike Tripp (Yam) for a more consistent fourth and fifth finish, Third Division of 125 wasn 't quite so radical, with Tim Dickson (Yam) getting the overall on the strength of his 1-4 finishes, The 125 Expert class also had a lesson to offer. Don't take the newcomers too lightly! Danny Willis (Yam), an Expert for less than a m on th , w on t he first moto, although it was not a breeze! He was punished for jumping the start by being turned around backwards for the restart. David Wood (Hon) got t he holeshot b ut bobbled; Phil Crane (Suz) took over the lead and there was Willis in second! Wood had drop~ed t o fourth and Chalma Ro berts (Ho n ) was running th ird. Crane had to dro p ou t a fter two lap s, an d Wood after fo ur, so Willis had t h e lead with a very determined Ro berts an d an equal ly determined Eric McKenna (Hon] battling it out for second. Roberts asserted hi mself and made the move on Willis. There we re a few very exciting lap s of heavy di cin g between the two, going over the jumps and down th e straights and aro und the turns side by side. Roberts did take the lead a time or two, but Willis would take it back. McKenna was staying right in there too, the first three riders in a tight group all the way to the finish which went down, Willis, Roberts, McKenna. Dana Waxharn (Suz), also with less than a month as an Expert, finished fourth. In the second m ot o it was Rob ert s all the way for a decisive win, and the overall. Waxham ran second the whole time and Willis had to work his way up fr o m ab out eighth to his third place finish and second overall. Waxharn collected fo r third overall. The rust lap of the 25 0 Experts had Eric McKen na (KTM) out in front' of a real battle between Alle n Berl u ti (Hus) and Phil Cran e , wit h Magoo (KTM) further back in the p ack o f 25 riders. By -the third lap Magoo was way o ut in the lea d with the other three men tioned still fighting it o ut. So o n Magoo was h alf a lap ah ea d of fourth pl ace Cr ane , and in the white flag lap Crane dropped to fi ft h after hard charging Dan Wall er (Suz) finally go t arou nd him . McKenna had the sec ond and Berluti third. The second moto had McKenna and Magoo trading the . Iead a few times but it eventually went to Magoo, McKenna was second again, followed across the line by Waller, John Minor (Suz) and J im Fisk. • Results in Results Section . J C~ PhtMilK ...
