In th e Amate ur class Tom Widick left everybody in th e dust and scampered around fo r a 3·1·3 , to add a notch to h is win list , while the real battle went on for second, third and fourth. Doyle Brown rom ped h is CZ around for a total o f 12 points and second overall, while Gerry Steiner and Jack Hurley fought for equal points (13) with Gerry taking the better placing in the th ird moto and the same for the day. Jack took the fourth spot, he sure makes that 125 Honda scoot ! ! The Novice class ended up with a real spread today. Chuck Hart blew everybody into the weeds with a clean sweep, followed by consistent Don Edlu nd with a 3·2·3 and second overall. Jerry Allen just got better and better all day with a 4-3 ·2 for third while Bob Klatt motored his Honda around in top form for fourth. Summer Regional Roadraces, those that did were rewarded with a full day of club roadracing. No ' wind (at Willow Springs???), lots of intriguing motor. cycles both in the pits and on the.track, and lots of p it woofies all conspired to make for a really enjoyable day of low-key club-type roadracing. In the 125 GP heat as well as the Main event; Mike Hishiki on his really trick Honda RSC Elsinore based, 6· speed, 155 Ib GP bike ran off and hid from the pack. Really no contest. His times (1:48 's, 1:49's) indicated that this new effort from Honda RSC could really open up the 125 GP class next year . Did I mention that it had a cable operated front disc and little 250-18 Japanese Dunlop KR roadracing tires? The 410 Box stock bash was, after at least 10 lead ch an ges, dec ided in fa vor of Marty Wilkison on his very rapid (b ut very st o ck) Honda 400. Wilkison and Chuck Parrne (R D-350) traded the lead time after time until Marty could pull out enough o f a lead to m ak e it st ick. T hird in class went to Moto-Morini mounted Denny Berg. He mentioned lit er th e ra ce th at by enterin g both Box · Sto ck , Mo di fied Production and 0-650 Cafe, he was able to rack up over 60 laps in a single afte rn oo n o f r acing. The 'comb in ed • Cafe & AF M Production final found Jim Haberlin usin g the horsepower of his newly acquired Laverda 1000 to ta ke a commanding lead on the first lap . Mike Lobenberg on th e Suzuki 380 likewise ran off and hid from the battling duo of Chuck Parme and Steve Gilbert. The Morini versus Honda 400 battle fo r 5th place being resolved with Denny Berg firmly ahead of Steve Carroll(F F-400). T h e 250 GP h eat r ace saw J o hn Glover (on his second only GP ride) lead most of the event with T ony Murphy playing catch up a fter having fluffed the sta rt . On the last lap Murphy closed up alm ost ten bik e lenghts between turns _ eight a nd nine.
