Other highlights include the arrival o f spectators from Vina in a helicopter and a spectacular lightning storm which to uched off three fires that could be seen from Cyclelan d. The last three races of the night were rained out. Jim Hubbard won t op money in both the Semi Pro series, each lasting ten weeks. The winners in the race for high point trophies were decided during the last p oint ra ce of the season in five classes. Five poin ts or less separated first and second in the 100cc Junior class, 200cc J unior, 360cc Junior, 200 Amateur and the 25 0 Handicap. Jim Co nger , Expert mini rider; transferred to the sportsman class this year. Norm ally competing in the 100cc class, he ro de against th e 125s one n ight when t h ere were n o ot h er 100s and showed them what he was mad e of by win ning the main event . John Grant was named hard ' luck rid er of th e year and fo r this distinction was awarded a cash p rize donated by George McK illop. Grant broke his leg the first n ight o f the season du ring practice. He was u nable to ride again un til the final race. The riders, usually on the rec eiving end o f any awards,- p resented . an engraved p laq ue to Denton Hill, their way of saying thanks for a job well done. Hill, who has been the official flagman at Cycleland for 14 years. was fo rced into " retirement" because of a heart attack earlier this year. By Sallee Hilto n S UNNYVALE. CAL .• SEPT. 19 Exp erts and Intermediat es were ru n to gether in all three classes, usin g a st aggered st art. Although it has been observed sometimes that r the Intermediates, or a t least a few of th em , keep u p with or p ass th e Experts, th is was not the case this time. Open Expert Ted Rogers led 12 laps of the first 15 lap mo ta before Rick Lon g (Yam) go t a rou nd him to take over the lead and the win. Ro gers finished second. an d Rory Rundle (KT M) cam e up for third. In the second mota, Ro gers started au t front again, but this tim e his lead on ly lasted one lap after which he found himself au t of com mission. Long again took over. He lasted five laps before Dave My then (KT M) became the new leader, and winner of the mota. My then had finished fo urth the first time around. Lung hung in for second, an d third for this/run went to Robert Norton (Hus) . Payo ffs went to Long (1-2), My then (4-1) and Ru n dle (1-4). Com ing from about sixth in the first 250 Expert mota, and fro m th ird in th e second, Ch ris Grewer (Hu s) took . bo th wins in that class, with Mike Hersman (Hus) and Bill Johnson (Ya m) each taking a second. A new rider in th e Expert ranks. Larry Wosic k (Suz) was th ird bo th ru ns: Dan Geery (Suz) st arted ou t leading the 125 Experts while Mike Bonner (Han), another new Expert, and Dan Dobbins (Han) diced) t out behind him. After a lo t of place swa pp ing, Bon net final ly got out ahead o f Dobbins and the n wen t on to tak e Geery as well, win ning th e mota. In the second rou nd, David Wood (lI on ), who had h ad a bad start the first time and could only work up to a fourth place a t th e finish , took the holesh ot th is tim e an d led the wh ole
