T albot , and our perennial in-house guest Rich ard Johnson - han g in there, Dick - 40 is not far away! . In the Novi ce class , Darwin Zenzer pulled off a classy ov erall win , with a snappy 1-2 , followed right behind in . second place by Kid Coffman, whose technique on his big Yammie keeps getting better and better. Howard Zimmerman go t hot in the second moto, taking the win and third overall for the day (and that 's no Bul),"with Monte James scrambling close by for fourth spot. . The Amateur class was a veritable freight train today, with Fred Maynard the chief engineer and da winnah with a clean I-I. with J. R. Trons snapping at Fred's heels , with a 2-2 and the same overall. Boyce Williams was in fine form . this day charging for third in both motos and third for t he day , followed by Dick Varvel with are-shaped CZ and a 4-5 for a hard-fought fo urth. " Al De nnler and Dick Frampton made the Expert class a real tussle for first with Al taking the first-win in the first · moto and Dick doing the -same in the second. Al held it a little tighter on points b y taking a second in the seco nd mo t o an d the top banana for the d ay, while Dick took second spot. Doug Archibald was close by all the time with a consistent 2-3 for 't h ird overall, and it was good to see Hal Grady out again right in line for fourth for the day. Marvi n Olson showed t he Masters th e way home today with a smooth 2-1 and No . One Honcho for the day, with Norb Brown right behind (on a Mai co ?) gassin' it for second overall. We all sure want to say how great it was to see Spike Duncan ou t today doing the thing and rocketing around for third spot, with Joltin ' Jim Warden right in there for fourth. • • . Dal VALENCIA, CAL., SE PT. 25 & 26 Thirty-five of the Super Snappy Swin gers Club came out this day to show how it's done at this very auspicious event, and by. golly a couple of Old Timer class winners emerged Saturday after the dust had set tled. Congratulations to J erry Steiner who won his divisio n in the Open class , an d also a round of applause to Arnie "Thumper" Adkinson, who led everybody home in the 4-stroke class. No rb Brown was no min at e d Veteran of the Year along with , Larry Shoe maker and Rick Selman on this o ccasio n. Seems as t houg h Bla ckie Lewis man aged a beautiful "sneaky Pete" start on t he grand prix, then blew a shift and everyone got by before the fir st turn. Blackie has been elected to demonstrate his starting and shifting technique at our u pco ming two day biggie at Edwards AFB, at the end of October , so that the art will 'not become lost for lack of use. Close race st ory of the day on Sunday goes to t h e Amateur class. Jerry Steiner got the holeshots today, bu t for some reason found the track more co mfortable to sit on , instead of his bike. Jerry still p icked off third spot by recover in g quickly and ridi ng .Iik:. the wind.John Seider p icked it u p in the fir st m oto and held the front sp o t right up to the finish , only t o be nipped by a wheel length at thelast seco n d by Pat Terlizzi, who ended u p in sec o nd overa ll. In the seco n d moto, Frank Ho shijim a led after J erry got o ff again , but John go t by Frank for the win in the moto and also for the overall win for the day, with Frank taking fourth. ' The Ex pert class really moved things around today with Hutch Hutchinson taking. the top banana with a 4-1, followed right behind with equal points by Ed Scheidler 2-3. Pr e-pr ogr am dia ls set memory f or next avg, By Dol PERRIS, CAL., OCT. 2 Perris Raceway set the scene with perfect tr ack conditions and a snappy program for an aggressive group of riders and a good time was had by most. Kirk Johnson needed the help of his younger brother to hau l away the trophies in four separate ra ces , and his dad's contented smile must have indeed made Kirk a happy young man. Ward McKee scored third overall in the T'I' Open Novice, but he was happy to pick uphis gloves and hot shoe from the Burton's, he had left them at the track ab o u t . four w eeks before. Bulta co mounted Jim Wood swept all three motos for first followed by Dave Jones in that same class. Dennis Pinheiro didn 't take the overall win, in the first Open Novice, but he did give Dave Boyd a go at it in the third mota for first. Dave finished with t he most points for the win. Kirk J o hn son , and Randy Miller were tied for first until the third mota, after rerunning the third mota, due to lap error, Kirk too k the win followed by Bultaco mounted Tom Clark, and Randy Miller for third. The Open Amateur/Expert win was also tied until the third mota, with Dusty Mudd giving thanks to Jim Fishback during troph y presentation for turning off t he gas, as Dusty p assed him on lap four and taking the win on the fmal lap . The short track was tried out by severa l sp eedway riders. Speedee Joe Spisak fro m Vista, tried his Jawa in the Open class, leading the first three laps an d dropping o ut d ue to safety reasons. The well known "Animal," Jim Fishback, w ho had do minated Inland Speedway on Wednesday nights, worked his way through the group on a Ya maha to take the win, with Dusty Mudd fo r second and Jeff North fo r t hird. The animal was presented by the track owner, Gerry Burton, a very appropriate tro phy befitting the animal wo rld. The trophy was just a half one though,the sou th end of a horse going north.
