Bill Banta'; (360 Hus) took the lead on the last loop to w in the 250/0pen Beginner race. Dave Pasley (250 Yam) led . the second' loop and ended up second. winning his class. Thomas Clark (5 00 Yam) won the Senior Beginner Class. It was high drama at the end of the (}.200 Beginner race. Mike Gary (Yam) was lea ding when he went down two , comers fro m the finish line. Everybody waited to see if he wou ld get passed. He was. going in to the finish righ t behind J oe Zuidema (Yam) . But Gary had a 45-seeond handicap 'a t the start. so it lo o ks like he wo n on time. Jennifer Wilson (Hon) had one of her best rides ever to win the Beginner Powder Puff class, while Kelly Kline (Yam) won yet another GP in the Mini class . The 2(}.mile course was exceptionally fast. Most of the course wen t down fireroad s, and the ' ones near the start were heavily watered in addition to th e rain. There were even two rnudholes on the course. CAL. • SEPT. 26 All those that came out Friday, night to set up for the "Fun Run" were treated to a spectacular thunder and lightning show. The storm dropped just enough rain to give the racers a virtually dust free ride. T he course went west from 395 towards the Rand Mountains. dropped into a canyon that led to Fremont Valley. then out across the bottomless sand to the . first check at the Highway. After leaving the check, the course took a cobby uph ill to Sidney Peak then around a side hill trail leading to a tricky downhill. The trail then led eastward across the foothills. and up again to Rand Peak, then out ac ro ss the valley to the finish. Tom Kelley was first to the bomb. followed by Tom Brooks, but Kelley relinquished the lead to Brooks. wh o held it all the way to the finish. for first overall and first Open Expert, o n a 4 00 KTM . Following close was Bru ce Ogilvi e on a 250 Harley, who also pl aced first Lightweight. Taking third overall and second ' 250 Expert was Brent Wallingford, on a Husky. William Saltzman fin ished fourth overall and second Open Expert. , First Open Amateur was Boyce Asquith. with Husky rider Ken ' Earnest finishing first 250 Am ateur. Havin g a good ride, Jeff Kaplan finished first 125 Expert and approximately 13th overall on a Husky. Taking first Lightweight 11 Amateur, was Bob West on an Ossa. and Novice Craig Ch an ey took the honors in his class. • Robert Carrol finished first Novice overall on a 400 Yamaha. while Novice rider Smoke Bomb, Jr. finished fir st 250 Novice. In the Senior Division, Smoke Bomb Gaetz finished first, although he had entered the Shamrocks Bugeaters, Hare Scrambles. of 1970. Dick Burley was first Amateur in the Senior Division with Dave Call taking first Novice.
