Cal City"GP to Brooks brothers By Dale Brown CALIFORNIA CITY, CAL., OCT. 2-3 Cordis Brooks (25 0 Bul) finished abo ut 50 secon ds ahead of his bro ther T om (400 KT;"I) and won the DRA Californ ia Cit y Gran d Prix. On the first lo op of t e I DO-m ile Amateur/Expert race, l\lorgan Malocco (500 Yam) to ok good adv an tage of his fr ont-row st art an d was leading. Near the en d of the loop he came off a jump onto th e pav ement so h ard he lost severa l spokes in th e rear wh eel. Cordis Bro oks had worked his w ay from a third -r ow s tar t to secon d an d he passed Morgan go ing a u t o n th e sec o nd lo op. Malocco spent the rest of d ie race at a subdu ed pace. Bo b Balen tin e (4 0 0 KTM ) passe d ove r 40 rid er s o n his first loop an d so on he p assed Cor dis. He buil t up a good lead before the rear tire went flat on a rocky hill and he re tire d. That put Cord is back in th e lead with Tom Kelly (250 KTM) righ t behind him. They kept each other co mp any fo r the nex t loop . "Every ti me 1 lo o ke d back, he was there. He didn 't ,gain o n me and 1 didn't ga in on him," Cordis ex pla ine d after th e r ace. Since Kelly was on ly 20 yards aft , he w as leadin g the race on tim e, be cau se he'd star ted 15 seconds behind Br oo ks. But o n the third loop , co ming off th e d irt onto the lo ng pave men t straight. Kelly went a little wide o n th e tum. cl ipped a di rt mound, crashed and severely be n t the handlebars. He droppedou t. T om Br ooks, m akin g his first ap pearanc e on th e big-bore KTM, too k ove r seco nd on Kelly 's spi ll. Tom h ad been having problem s, siez ing th e b ike twice and h avin g to stop to fr ee a sn agged brake ca b le. Mike Keen (3 60 Hus) , wh o o n ly sho ws up a t th ese GPs, too k over third and Doug Win ch ell, 'en gaged in a w ....estling m at ch with his 5 00 Yamah a th u mper in th e ro u gh sect ion s, was fourth. Cordis finished th e race in I hour, 50. 17 m inutes n ext. close enough that th e ci ty computer was put to u se to m ak e the first tw o positions official. Cordis will recieve over $ Il 00 for his win and Tom will ge t abou t $45 0. • Keen and Winchell st ayed where they ' were, fin ishing th ird and fourth. J ohn McD owell (360 Hus ) who won th e Spring Novice race, fin ished fifth overal l and first A ma teur. J ohn had no p rob lem s. n o cra shes; just a stead y, un sp ectacular ride that puts o ne in th e money. Mo n te Lee (Ya m) took sixth, second 250 with a sim ilar ride. In co ntra st, Ch ris Kallen (4 00 Yam ) did no t have a boring day. He wen t down in the first comer off the start. He go t up and was ru nning t hird w he n he loo p ed the bike o n a fif th-gea r ju mp at th e en d o f p it row on th e second loo p. lI e skidded alo ng o n his back for a coup le of hu ridred feet or so , go t up an d b ack o n the b ike and too k o ff with out losing a posi t io n. But the cr ash sn ap ped off th e fro n t brak e lev er and disabl ed th e rear brak e pedal, leaving Chris with out b rak es. T o top it off, the rear tir e went flat on the last loop. Phil Stumbo (25 0 CZ) finis he d eighth, af te r ridi ng the last loop with th e exha u st p ipe broken in half. In addition only being able to pull third gear o n the p avemen t, Phil had a hard time hearing after th e race. It l oo ks to us like Lee Wilson I11 (175 KTM) to ok firs t small-bore, bu t like the rest of th e results her ein , its highly un official. It also looks like Gus Paull (4 00 Yam ) aced ou t J ohn Klu g (4 10 Hon) ,for t he Sen io r win. Su nday morning's 25 0/Open Novice race we nt to Wes Finkle (4 00 Yam ). Wes c o mes o ut to m ost of the races, bu t o n ly ride s the " b iggies", Startin g on the second row, he m oved quic kly into the lead and wo n going away . T his despite his shou ldlr popping ou t of p lace th ree 'tim es due to a prev ious injury. Riley Du ncan (370 Su z) ra n in second for mo st .of the , race , but Eric Burney (250 Hu s) go t by on the last lo op . On Saturd ay afterno o n, a new race was hel d fo r 0-200 Novi ces, Advanced Po wd er Pu ffs and Senior Novices. Darren Pritchett ( 125 Yam) won it af te r lo sing the Sprin g Beginner race by a third of a seco nd. But righ t behin d h im was Leslie Klug (25 0 Han). Leslie started in th e six th row, bu t was in th e top te n after on ly 20 m iles. As soo n as
