And ..c once again Tony Wanket, John Smith, and Chuck Pettigrew proved "Wh o is Who" in the Pro goings. o t o Good races always need to get off to goo d st ar t s . .. As usual, Neal Mofhitz (the infamous AMC starter) got the day off and rolling with his youthful and daring antics as gate puller while thirty 125 Juniors await with anticipation ;.add to that his mind-boggling flag starts and you 've got one helluva way to star the day. Tony Wanket t imed him self ' perfectly to Neal's motio ns to lead his fellow 125 Pros to the first corner. From there, Wan ket was unstoppab le, Marty Miller and Mark Tyer (both of Miller Mano) tried in vain to c atch the Flying Machine Flash: MM's latest Pro threat, Tim Tolar, swept by his teammates to land himself in second spot by moto's end. Tyer jumped directly into the leadin t he final moto, never to be challenged by Wanket, who trailed behind in second assured of the overall winnings. Tyer didn't score any money after a DNF in the first round. Steve Bartley of DG nabbed second overall with a mark of 3-5, while another Miller Man iac Co rki Moore (Suz) racked up third winnings. John Sm ith (Suz ) proved to be the ' undisputed champ in today's 250 Pro bout by tallying up two moto wins. Scott Montgomery (Suz) led the first moto for a short while, but had to give way to Jon Derhammer (Mon) and a flat tire. Montgomery came back in the second round to knoek Derhammer out of contention for second b y easily grabbing second spot, ' , There was no way getting around Chuck Pettigrew aboard his Maic o in the Open race. Two firs place finishes cinched the win for him , leading both ro unds all the way. Kenny Frost (Suz) , was his closest co mpetitor with a 3-2 score. . Results in Resul ts Section. , Get set for Ascot Half-Mile By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CALIF ., ocr.i, 1976 If last' week's Ascot was dismal, this ' week was top notch and gave the fans all they -wanted to see in the way of half-mile racing. ' Defending Grand National Ch am p io n Gary Scott was back home with a ride on a Yamaha that was not quite up to the test he was giving it. His scheduled mount, a Io.year-old Triumph waso 't ready, so he mounted the Bob Bradley-Eddie Hammond Yamaha that John Gennai had ridden to victory last week. But the bike let go in practice and he switched to a bac k-up bike that's usually ridden by D oug Hannon. The Novice heats got progressively faster as they were ' run off. Eddie Lawson (Yam) took the first one with Charlie Su mmers (Yam) firm ly in second un til his bike bl ew on the last lap and Eric Engen got the direct transfer. The time dropp ed again by two seconds as T ony Alves (Yam) and Rick Delacy led them home. Pole position in the m ain went to third heat winner, Jim Mertens (Yam) with Dave Lujan coming in sec ond. In th e first .h ea t, Scott Pearson (H-D) shot into turn o ne firs t, but by tu rn two it was Davidson ex itin g first , leavin g Randy Gibbs (Yam) to pass up Pears on fo r sec o nd. Second he at Steve Fortu ne (Yam) took th e outside lineinto t he lead and then had to ho ld off a very hard challen ge from Rich Warren (Yam) w ho was pursued b y J im Halkola, The first Expert heat came ,up, J im Wright (Yam) sh oo ting for t he lead, bu t by the en d of lap one it was Ak sland, Wright and J ohn Allison. Alli son go t right up to Wright, who at one point just outpowered him, butJohn made his move and left Wright and Paul Bostrum to bump each other around. Hank Scott (Yam) was always there, picking them off and ending up with third, Second heat as the gang boomed out o nto the b ack chute it was Rick Hocking, Mike Myers, and Gene Romero, all Harley m ou n ted , in front. .. . Really going at it for second were SCOtl and Paul Bostrum with Paul finally holdin g onto second. Gary Scott, riding very hard on the unfamiliar Yamaha, go t up to fourth and a transfer.ijust getting th e edge over Mike Myers at the flag with Steve Morehead (H-D) coming in for the last transfer. e, . I ' 1 Vince Mead (II-D) led the J un io r semi wire to , w ire followed in by Rod Sexton (Yam ), who was alway s in the hu nt, bu t just co uldn 't qu ite catch up to Mead, wh ile John Matherson ( Yam) tied , up third. Do n Grigsby (Y am)dashedoff with the lead in the Novice semi and never lost it , altho ugh he had to let it all hang out, staying in fron t of A rt Junker in the early lap s. Chris Pau lson, o n a Kawasa ki, arrived on Junker 's tail an d took ove r second but Eddie San Roman o uldntt ta ke th ird away fro m Art. Gene Romero go t the power all do wn to the gro u nd and sho t off into th e tr ophy d ash lead with Skip Aksland foll owing cl osely on t he ou tside line , But as" th e fo ur came aro und, it was Ho ckin g up fr ont. Romero, A ksland and Paul Bostrum. Jim Mer tens had bike trouble as the Novice Main lined up and was eventually replaced by altern ate Artie May (Kaw) . The riders fin ally got away,
