The suspension on his 400 Yamaha was too hard for the deeply trenched course but he kept motoring anyway. In the second ra ce Roger took it wire to wire with Moisseev chasing him for most o f the race until he crashed on the twelfth lap and Mikkola passed Noyce on the same lap and moved into second when Moisseev went out. Graham had moved up from a sixth position on the first lap to finish in fifth behind van Velthovan and Heerlings who was top scorer for the Dutch. DiStefano was again top scorer for the Am e rican team in sixth p lace and Moisseev got up from his earlier crash and crossed the line in seventh place ahe ad of Sigmans, Weil and Everts. 12 The rest of th e West G erman team also clicked in the second race with Schmitz finishing eleventh, Dieffenbach twelfth and Bauer in fourteenth. After the race the Americans protested the start to the International Jury saying that Team Belgium had three men on the front row. The rules of the Motocross des Nations state 't hat the riders must push their dead-engined bikes to the starting line and then upon signal they must be kick-started. Rex Staten 's Harley-Davidson wouldn't start and he pulled it off the line to have it push started. The riders were waiting for the gate to drop when Staten got back to the start and his position was blocked by van Velthovan. Staten waved his arms but it was too late; the gate was dropped and the ra ce began. The protest . , was declared valid, van Velthovan was ' moved back on e pl ace in the results of tlie second race but the protest caused no change in the Team standings. • Results I.
