T he 1I00cc Yoshimura Kaw (c o-rid den by Gr eg Bau er ) h ad b een unch allenged sinc e th e 34th lap of th e three m ile c ircuit when Richard Patton crashe d while attempting to p ass Duncan Pau l (400 Kaw] in the infield. A look of ca ta str o p he spread across the face of co-rider J oe Patton as he reali zed that the race was over for his brother, their extremely rapid 750 Honda, and him. On lap 3 4 they were leading t he DelM onico /Bauer green rneanie by" 30 seconds. Bikes and riders were evenly matched and the real racing ac tion was going on in the pits. The Patton fueling action was being orchestrated by Glenn - Pat to n , their father/sponsor (Glenn's Honda, Midl and , Tx.). The Bauer/DelMonico effort seemed to have a p lan bu t by contrast they seemed to take a good deal longer. On the production sid e of th e ledger arch-riv als Feddie Sp en cer and Gene Homo t team ed up to bring th eir RD-400 in first.
