SRACMX Grand Prix By Action OZ COLORADO SPRINGS,COLO.,SEPT. 5 Labor Day weekend turned into real labor for Colorado MX'ers who tried to keep up with Arlo Englund. Arlo had just returned from Louisiana where he had taken sixth overall in an AMA race the week before. As is usually done here in Colorado at a Grand Prix event, the Mini and Novice events were held the day before, leaving the B and A riders to battle for double poin ts on Sunday. Off the line first was AI Firestine (Yam) for the 125A's first moto. Firestin e was followed by Stacy Smi th riding a Suzuki, bu t Englund didn't let one lap go by before he was in the lead, never to be passed again. . Dale Ruggles, who'd had his bike stolen that very morning, was able to borrow a bike to continue his battle for a high placing in the year end points tally. Firestine seemed to tire, and Smith got off at one point on the track; the bike never did run well the rest of the moto. Ruggles, on the borrowed Honda, passed Firestine and moved up to six tho A t the end of the first moto, it was Englund all the way . There were two 250A qualifying motos. Englund won one and Gary Glasenapp (Bul) won the other, setting up a battle for the last moto of the day, 250A overall. The state's top 250 riders, Cannon, Todd, Corbett, Englund and Glasenapp, headed the impressive list, Before the fans could see the final race, the Open A class had to come up. Gary Glasenapp, the favorite, came off the line sixth, bu t before the lap was over, he'd taken the first position. Mike Kern (Bul), riding a fmc moto up to this poin t, tried avoiding a crashed rider only to crash badly himself and was eliminated for the day. Glasenapp too went down losing several positions. Stan Smith (Mai), riding an inspired race, was very hard to get around, but the final was Glasenapp taking the moto by a decisive finish over the Open A field. The second 125A moto came off the line with Englund ou t front, Smith, Overton and Firestine. Rick McGaha (Hon) pulled a fan tastic move and shot in to fifth before the lap was ou L Mike, Rust (Hus) gave chase and passed both Boo Stichter (Yam) and McGaha to assume fifth by the end of the second lap. Englund pulled out another lead and win as he'd done in the first moto. The second Open A moto came off the line with Bob Moore (Yam) in first, Stan Smith second. Glasenapp dumped it in the hairpin and lost eight places but before the lap was over, he'd moved in to third. Two laps later Glasenapp had the lead. Englund had time to rest before the final 250 A moto but Glasenapp had only the Open B race to get his wind. Englund got off the' line first, Shane Cannon second, Corbett (CA) third, Glasenapp fourth. Glasenapp worked his way past Corbett and dumped his bike, faIling back to sixth.
