September 21 .By Dennis Greene Six teen riders rode their hearts out Tuesday night at Ventura, trying to earn one of the six spots still left open for the October 16 U.S. Speedway National at Costa Mesa. This was the third round of competition and the points are adding up for several riders. The only position to change in the top six was the addition of Sonny Nutter, m oving in to fifth place all the way from ninth. Rookie Ron Preston is still in front at the end of three ro unds, Larry Shaw second, Rookie Gene Woods in strong for third, Randy Marsh fourth, Sonny Nutter ruth and Danny Becker sixth. Sonny Nutter was the high -poin t rider of the night with 13 points. Bill G ray set a not-50-e nviable record of his own! He fell from seventh to 12th spot by getting off five times in one night, twice in one race. In h is final ride of the nigh t, he got back so me self-p ride by winning over Gene Woo ds, Dean Forman and Randy Marsh . T hat was the on ly three points all night for Gray. Costa Mesa, September 24 By Dennis Greene The final night of National qualifying was held at Costa Mesa, the site of this year's Nationals. Point leader, Ron Cham~ion. Preston, only earned seven points for the nigh t, bu t with the high score total of 55, goes in to the finals as Number One Rookie. Going into Friday's competition Gene Woods, another rookie, was in the second spot with 41 poin ts, bu t only earned three more for the night This dropped him out of the top 16 and he will be the first reserve rider. Larry Shaw moved up by adding nine points to his 40 for 49. Sonny Nutter also moved up one to third with 48 points. Randy Marsh was fourth. The biggest jump of the night was turned in by Scott Sivadge who moved from eighth into the Nationals in fifth spot, And big Jim Fishback who went into the night's event in sixth stayed right there with a total of 45 points.
