Palomo and Dutchman Boet Van Dulmen were tied o n po ints at the en d of the t wo 2 1 lap legs so th e matter was d ecid ed o n time w ith Palomo co ming up ace s, But n either m an won a race ! V an Dulmen battled with Ph il Read in th e firs t leg wh ich was run in the rain, but th e British acevmaking wh at h e claim ed was his final European race , w as well clear at the flag. Palomo was th ird home and in th e second leg he took fourth place , ah ead of Van Dulmen ; th at wa s go od eno ugh to clin ch overall supremacy . Winner of th e second leg was Italian Giacomo Agostini, who de vast at ed th e op p osit io n in th e 21 lap ra ce after making hard work for himself in the first leg! . Ago had set join t faster time- in practice with Johnny Cecotto who, like Gia como, had anno unce d th at he wanted to win th is meeting not just for the king-size pa y check th at Champion Spark Plugs had offered as bait, but also to prove they had something to show in Formula 750 racing. Ago , o n th e p ole p ositi on on th e grid , left his Yamaha in th e ca re of an off icial and sp rinte d to hi s van to rep lace a faulty visor. With th e water temper ature risi ng on hi s rival s' m achin es, t he sta rt just co uld n 't be held ~ to o lon g and Ago's m achine was wheeled off the grid by Rod Gould, wh o h ad don e hi s best to p er suade the m to wait just a little longer . T he tw o 18 stro ng waves roared off down the tr ack as Ago re t urn ed . More than one minu te beh ind the re st , he set off in pursu it. Perh ap s Ago was luc ky not to have starte d with the rest! Lead er j ohnny Cecotto discovered to hi s cost just h o w slippe ry th e track had be com e wh en a fine rain started to fall. At the new ch icane before th e start an d finish area at th e end of the first lap. th e bi g Yamah a slid aw ay and Cecotto fell off. The bike bounced b adly, th e petrol tank w a s th ro w n clear and th e mach ine and tank caught fire. As th e deb ris spun d own the trac k it left a wall o f fire fo r the pack to charge th rough. By some miracle no o ne was brought down in the confusion. Cecotto was quickly to his feet, bitterly d isappointed and out of the race. . Eventuall y th e burning wr eck age wa s ext inguish ed by the fir em en , but the spe cial fact ory Yam ah a OW31 machine was a very sorry sigh t ! . Phil Read had b een o n johnny's hee ls as h e slid o ff, chased b y Dutchman Boet van Dulmen on a Yamaha and the Suzuk i of Wil Hartog. Gar y Nixon was fourth on his Erv Kannemoto prep ared K awasak i and fell ow American Pa t Hennen wa s fifth. The 60,000 fans were happy despite the rain. Alto came through last but he was not goingla5 quickly as he could. In th e conditions it was hardly surprising!
