Fro m the t h ird lap on Rex and Gary carried on a battle of raging proport jons, Then on the 12th lap Campbell slipped off the groove and Scott went underneath Rex to t ake fourth . Beauchamp was now on the offense. Roberts had wo rk ed his way through traffic and was as h igh as fift h momentarily before a slip off the groove cost him at least three spots. Poovey , now p laying it co o l and holding a st ea dy second, was burning up his rear tire trying to ge t traction by lay ing his 11 5 pound body as far b ack over the rear wheel as he could. Behind the Springer, Poovey, Hank Scott, Gary Scott and Beauchamp crew, Ricky Campbell was lighting off IJrSt Roberts, then Eves and then finally Boody. He held them all . On lap 17 Poovey made his one mistake of the evening and slip p ed off the groove. In a flash both Scotts scooted by as Poovey quickly got back into action before losing any more ground. Springer was gone and the crowd waved him on as they did the bro th ers Scott. Ex itin g t urn four heading for the white flag Hank looke d , o ver his left shoulder and m otioned ' Gary pa st a nd into se cond. Springer too k the chec ker s easily w ith t he Scott 's lo ft ing t heir fro n t wheels at t h e fin ish . A cro wd surrounded Springer, Gary and Hank before t h e trio co u ld get to th e winner's circle and ex citedly offered praise to their favorite. Goss m ade times hard for Pearson as he put his Vista Sheen Harl ey into second w ith Alan Loughhead t h ird " and Layne Wright fourth. / Pearson led off the race from his pole position with the close company of Randy Goss, Greg Deau, A la n Loughhead, and John Ellis . Loughhead quickly moved to third. Deu went down and out; Randy Raker moved in to challenge for fourth; Layne Wrigh t then moved into the action and moved Raker out. Meanwhile Goss had cut Pearson's lead and was quickly moving up to ch alle ng e. Pearson began to shu t the gas off early entering the t urn s in hopes of slo wing Go ss. With two laps to go Go ss alm o st went under Pearson in turn one only to appear to slip o ff t he groove, givin g Pearson the breathing room he ne eded fo r the w in . Pearson, not in g t h at this was t h e first ti m e he had raced on a track with a surface like ' Toledo, said he " had a helluva go od t im e and a lo t o f fun do ing it."
