In the pits, a ho rde of people led by Gary Scott fussed over t he bike to no avail. Then the decisio n was made to tear the engine down and a broken ring found. That and the piston we re changed in a sweat-filled session with only the warm-up laps p rior to the National to tell if the work was good or not. Spectator favorite Ken ny McDonald put together what the majority of riders were thinking when he said, '" would have rather run last night. Today is a whole dif fer en t ballgame. The gu ys that were really fast last nigh t may not go as well today and those who weren't fast may have a bet ter shot now." Guy McClure led the p ack away fr o m a clean st ar t , but wa s quickly displ aeed by St eve Elo with McDonald, Lo we, Poo vey , Aksland, Han k Sco tt , Ridgeway , Sp ringer and Roberts fo llowing. Elo took the lead on the next go around with McDonald disp lacing McClure fo r seco nd a nother lap in to the program . McDonald began to pressure Elo as Ru sh , while avoiding a bump in turn three, slid down and restarted last. By lap five McDonald was still app ly ing the p ress ure to Elo with McClure and Poovey holding th eir own battle and Lowe ho ld ing off Springer. Poovey too k McDonald fo r second on lap six with McD o nal d crashing in an attempt to re take h is p o sitio n . Re d flag . Hank Scott benefited most from the restart as h is cre w r epl aced his Goodyear rea r tire with a Carlisle. Eklu nd made a pl ug change . Elo took the lead on the restar t with his game plan for the final 14 laps already formed. Te rry Poovey had other ideas and stampeded past as Elo , claiming he was center punched ex iting turn four, brushed the wall an d lost four places. T en laps into the race McClure was hounding Poovey and Springer was into third as Gary Scott hung onto seve nth and Roberts rolled in 12th. Hank Scott was on the move with his new tire giving him the drive he needed. Springer held off Scott until the 16th lap when .Han k went around and set his sigh t s on McClure, who was still h ounding Poovey . Poo vey shook the pr essure off for the win w ith McClure, Ha nk and Springer following. There was happine ss in the air as the Texas clan, led by Terry's brother Teddy converged o n the diminutive winner.
