_._._._._and again it was AI Glover who was right behind him all the way, waiting for the mistake that never came. Dave Johnson didn't fare too well on the half-mile but took a back seat to no one on the IT and set fast time for the evening, winning the Open Expert. Charles Petty was second. Jim Ro ach is learning how to win with his new Yamaha 500 and after throwing a chain in his heat race, came back to win the Open Amateur IT. On the half-mile it was Dave Peters from start to finish. John Karnes took over second after the first lap and Gary Smith moved by Jim Roach to pick up third. Bob Bell won the Open Novice IT, decided to try the Amateur and ended up doing a super spectacular one and a half off his big Triumph. Frank Scilleppi went wire to wire to win the.· Open Novice Half-Mile. A! Glover showed the 250cc Experts how to ride the IT after getting Joe Steffen figured out during the heat race. A! was hot all night long, even to the point of playing cowboy when a pack of German Shepherds thought the track , was the place to be. Charles Petty rounded out the field with third. Scott Thurlow took the Amateur Division over Bret Stadel, a visitor from Auburn, California. Joe Steffen held off Dylan Neihart to take the 250cc Expert Half-Mile. Danny Perkins, still getting use to his 250, was third. • Mark Butler and Mike DeBruyn played share in the 250cc Novice goes. Mike ran second to Mark on the IT and then Mark returned the favor b y running second to Mike on the Half-Mile. John Casey led the 125cc Novice regulars ' from start to finish, Brad Bates was second and Ty Cline third. . Tom Headley did such an outstanding job winning the 125cc Novice Half-Mile that he earned himself a transfer to Amateur. Toyama flies, AMC leaves OCIR By Rex Reese EAST IRVINE, CAL., AUG. 26 The heat was off the 100 Pros, but . there was not rest for the 125s as Gregg . Toyama (FMF) switched guns to shoot it ou t with another switch-hitter, Rich Collins (KTM ) , who had deserted the big bores. No doubt both had the same idea in mind (winning), but it wasn't as easy as that for either one of them. Tonight also brought to a close AMC 's night MX series as Bette Lasker's Friday night' operation became another victim of television and weekend drive-in movies. The combined Pro start was a constant tug of war, with eventual Open winner John Cardoza (Suz) against 250 winner Mike Stearns (Hus), while Toyama and Collins were off on their own, running 1-2 . The only upshot out of all the action was the singular victory of Open Pro Hank Schmidt (Yam) in the first moto, which he won on his four-stroke IT 500. Not bad considering all those ring-dings. Collins put his own win as he got past Toyama in the last moto; but Gregg's two wins had it all locked up while Rich could on ly take second. On the rise in the 125 Beginners are Steve Pfaff (Hon) and Steve Zizzo (Hon). The first moto saw them leading traffic with Zizzo first and Pfaff second. ·But in the second, Steve (Zizzo, that is) got caught in the crowd back in seventh; while Steve (Pfaff, that is) prevailed for first, and did it again in the final for the overall win, while Zizzo caugh t up to capture second. • Results in Results Section.
