Novice J erry Steiner showed his talent by picking off holesho ts and second overall after trading wins wi th James J ones, who took the last moto and first overall. Big Jerry Scott smoothed out some of those chuck holes in fine fashion for third, followed closely by Dan Harris. In the Novice group , Doyle Bro wn and Chuck Hart traded wi ns and second places, with Doyle taking the second win and ending up to p banan a fo r the day. Three Amateurs joined the Experts t oday and Amate ur Fred Maynard gave a great consistent performance fo r 9 cancellations at two other facilities . The race was a last minute effort, and Promoter Butch Lee did the best he could under the circumstances. The Carlsbad GP course was accomodating a Cl\IC event and wasn't available so Butch had to settle fo r a section o f the Viewfinders GP course. The guys who were hired to water the track decided to bug out and go to the beach, the SoCal hard pack turned to dust . Butch extends his 'apologies to all those who raced and swears by t h e AL\IA rule bo ok that it wo n 't happen again. Brown hu ng on t o second, AI Hall was third and Joe Santich made a brilliant run from dead last to third. Northern California hotshoe Jim Lesnieski (Hu s) led the lo cals through the first turn in the 250 gig along wi th Phil Taylor (Kn l), and Scott Carl (Mai) . Karl relieved Taylor of second on lap three and began a drive for the lead but Taylor stuck with Karl and zapped him back on lap four. Ka rl regained second on lap six and once again began to close on Lesnieski. Taylor found his possession of third challenged by Da vid Mo rris (Q uinsey Kawasaki) and lost it on lap seven. Karl, Mo rris, and Taylor all stepped up the pace, closing on Lenieski even quicker. Karl inherited the lea d after a two lap battle with Lenieski a nd Mo rris. Meanwhile, Fred Griego (Suz) and J im Ma rt in (Martin Specialties CZ) were charging in fifth and six th o At the flag it was Karl, Mo rris.
