Dav is For mer Californian, Doug Bradbury was the winner of the 1976 Ute Cup with the best overall performance of the 103 Da llas, TX 752 11 Big "0" Cycle contestants that entered. The Ute Cup is a two day Scottist type observed trial held in the Colorado high country on trails once used the the Ute Indians. The Ute Cup was started seven years ago by the Rocky Mountain Trials Association (RMTA) as an annual premiere club event. Because it was such an ou ts tandin g event, it at tracted so m e of the best trials tider in the coun try who took the trophies and awards away fro m the Colorado riders. All this was changed last year when the n at ion ally ranked riders outside of Colorado were declared ineligible. This ru le did not p revent other out of state riders to co mpete . This year there were 20 riders from Michigan alone. The course for the first day consisted of 20 observed sections and an 18 mile trail ride starting at the Ponderosa Guest Ranch north-west of Salida. Six hours were allotted for the loop and sections to be ridden twice. The best performance of the day was by Pat Grimes with only six points lost. Less skilled riders took as many as 78. Section one was a water section and perhaps the most difficult of the day. The winner of the bog trophy (the rider who has the most spectacular failure in the traditional bog section) dabbed up to his hip in the mud and fell in to his neck. The other 18 sections were well set by the trials masters: Sam Dennison, Mike Foster and Larry Lund. The most exciting feature of the day was the 2x12 stiles built over the barbed wire fences wh ich co u ld be used in lieu of the closed gates. At the first o ne, the gate sure looked more inviting than the "A" frame stile, Sunday's loop was 20 m iles long with . 19 observed sections t o be ri dden twice in a six h our ti me period. Over half of the sections were in water, resulting in no few bike d ro wn ings; the res t of the sections were in loos e rock. The lo op obtained an elevator o f 11,500 feet at an u phill rock section . The do wn h ill j ust after this section was a heart st opp er . T he best ri de on Sunday was tu rn ed in by Bill Schaaf with nine points lost. Bill rode the first 25 sect ions clean. Fantastic! But the overall winner of the Copp er Ute Cup was Do ug Bradbury who lost 11 points to be added to the 20 he lost the day before. And Pat Grimes? Pat was unable to hold the pace he had set on Saturday, but di d well eno ugh to take second overall. • Re sults in Results Section. Amafeur qualifiers af Waynesville and Ponca Cify By Jack B.
