INSIDE Upshot Dates & Data ; Camel Pro short track 250 (male?) Jr. class? If she can ride at all in the male class, it should be in the Expert division. But since the Powder Puffs exist, the girls should stay with their classification to sign-up as a male contender and . completely divorce themselves from all Powder Puff competition. The way it is in one particular case, is that if the male competition looks too tough for her to win atrophy, then she will sign -up that particular day to race against the girls, which is unfair to the other girls to have to compete against a "male competitor". How to keep honest We read with interest Willt Garnett's letter in a recent issue, and wanted to add our input to the very important question of the adminstration of "box stock" roadracing. Conceptually: the box stock class is the source of most riders coming into the sport. Like most roadracing traditions, it has its basis in Western Europe and Canada. In these areas it enjoys excellent participation and is administrated by professionals, As you so aptly point out the enforcement of the rules is very important and we are constantly trying to upgrade these procedures. All WERA tech inspectors are salaried and are screened carefully (resumes included) before they are hired as tech inspectors. The exception does not prove the rule and if one engine slipped through without being noticed, that does not change the concept of the box stock class. The latest method we are experimenting with in order to enforce , "box stock" utilizes the old weigh t method which brothers in car racing have used for many years. The machine is weighed and if it falls within a certain range then we know it has not been lightened drastically. If it still continues to outpower the machines in its class, we look further for modifications which hav e not been list ed. ' Remember, this, class is one of the most popular in Europe, Canada and certainly in all the WERA events coast t o coast. It does take a certain degree of honesty on the part of the competitors and if that is hard for some individuals we have additional plan. to increase th e penalties for violations of these rules. We thank you for your constructive ,criticism. PETER F R AN K General Manager W/ERA Sot.ir cherries This letter is a complaint against "cherry pickers" and/or "women's libbers". Since I, a male 125 Expert, am not allowed to compete in Powder Puff contests (Beg inner s, Expert, etc.) why is an Expert Powder Puff rider (w it h national standing) allowed to ride in the After reading the "end of Ascot" article, it appear. to be another classic case of the A-'\IA not having their ducks in line. Maybe even a "Nobody said it would be easy." The AMA has once again placed hardships on a lot of guys who were probably depending on As cot. A bunch of people paid a goodly amount of money for their A-'\IA Competition licenses in the So Cal area, expecting to race Ascot at least. But as in a lot of other cases, the AMA did not .Io o k out for the interest of those paying the way. So now, mid-season, things go bad. The CMC is probably a good bunch and the races could go on, but the AMA was paid, not CMC. The AMA doe. a lot for sure. They help a lot of people who don't even know it, and never pay a cent. But if they forget to help those who pay they won't get paid.
