Pomeroy was told to keep an eye on
the clock, it would signal the gate would
drop when the sweeping hand hit zero.
jim's instructions were wrong and he
was left at the line when the gate
dropped before it hit zero and the other
riders were blasting for the first tight
right hand tum. •
,
When the gate dropped Moisseev
jumped 'his KTM ahead and cut sharply ,
in front of Mikkola heading in a straight '
line for the first comer. The first wave
of riders behind him had Palm on the
wide, Out ch iniko v tucked in behind
Moisseev and Mikkola all alone on the
outside braking later and having the
advantage exiting the tum for the long
fast straight past the mechanics' area.
Moisseev ro cketed out ahed of the rest
of the field and never let off as he
gunned his powerful KTM smoothly
aro und the deep sandy circuit that was
sucking up mach ines an d spitting off
riders. One of the first to go was Torleif
Hansen. He was removing a tear-off
from his goggles when the wheel hit a
rut turning it to the stops. Torleif
parted company with the Kawasaki over

Everts finishing a disappointing eighth
and Hakan Andersson rounding out the
top ten but in so much pain that' he
would not start the second race.
He ikki was World Champion with one
last race to go. The riders lined up in
almost the same or der, and when the
gate dropped Moisseev again blas ted the
KTM to get the holeshot.
It was Moisseev's day and his lead was
unchallenged to the checkered flag even
though Torleif Hansen put on hard
charge that put him in second place
only eight seconds behind the Russian.
Mikkola was taken out of the race the
hard way when two riders, one of them
Daniel Pean , squeezed him off the track
and he crashed on his back. He jumped
up unhurt but saw no reason to get back
into the action.

serious trouble when he got to a high
speed comer went to knock it off
coming into the berm and found his
throttle stuck open. Jim made it part
way through the tum ahead of Rond
but then lost con trol and smashed
through a fence into the infield area. He
fiddled with the cab le and tried to get it
righ t but even wi th mechanic Arnie
Beamon's .help he was too far back to
make it worth re-entering the race .
A big gap now separated the first
three with Moisseev still pouring it on,
Heikki rid ing cau tiously, in second and
Uno Palm going strong in third.
Outchinikov was holding down fourth '
with no problem but a terrific scrap was
going on for fifth with Hakan Carlquist
on a Kawasaki bought from Torleif
Hansen after giving up on Ossa's lack of
support, and Gerard Rond, the young
Dutch rider on the monoshock Yamaha.

which smashed his 'righ t knee. His

finally destroyed itself', Kavinov was
also added to the DN F list.
At the finish Moisseev had stretched
his lead to twenty-three seconds over
Mikkola who took the second place that
he needed to clinch the title. Heikki's
pace was n 't that slow, he finished
twenty-seven seconds ahead of Palm
who was racing on his home track.

retired after the scuffle with Mikkola
when his Maico seized.
It had come down to the last race in
Sweden and each rider did what he had
to do for the Championship bid for the
World title. Moisseev won both races as
he had to do, but Mikkola took the
second place he needed and it ended
163 to 162 for the year.
- Heikki brought Husqvarna its twelfth
world title, and naturally everybody
from the factory was there to cheer him
on and congratulate him . The town of
Husqvama is lo cated only forty -five
minutes from Ulricehamn and the end
of the season GP party at the Hotel
