T RO NA , CAL ., AUG. 29 Over 600 desert riders had a chance to go for it in one or more of 38 di ffer ent du al Eu rop ean scrambles events held by th e San Gabri el & Buzzard s MC clubs. 26 Brooks/ Kelly duo nabs DRA Team Race The Sunday event was probably cl oser to a moto cross than a desert race, including the tr ain th at wen t th rou gh ' to wn' at two a.m. Sunday. Each cl ub provided two separate co urses, on e for the Am ateur-Experts an othe r for No vices, ranging in size from six to eleven miles and traversed from one to three t ime s. Races were held on th e hour from 8 a.m , to I p.m . Bum luck for the day t rophy probably should have gone to Bob Rutten (Hus) who was running first until, within view of the finish on the last lap, two flat tires allowed Bren t Wallingsford (Hus) to slip p ast . Second pl ace for the same trophy goe s to Bruc e Ogilvie who came out Saturday to prerun th e course and make sure the bike was prepped. He encoun tered no trouble Saturday , but it was a DN F, du e to problems onl y half a mile into the race, on Sunday. By Dale Brown CALIFOR NIA CITY , CAL., AUG. 29 Cordis Bro oks and T om Kelly set a blist ering pace in bl istering he at to win ORA's 147-mile team race with a nine-minute lead . Rich Mark (Suz) was the early leader with Brooks back around fifth by the time the course entered the can yo ns . By th e hal fway mark on the loop , Brooks was in second an d gain ing on th e leader. Desp ite a rear flat on his 250 Bult ac o, Cordis cam e into the pits a stro ng second an d handed the bandoleer to Kelly (250 KTM). Abou t tw o m iles out of th e pits, T om passed Mark's partner , Mike "Downhill" "Alexa nder (Yam) for the lead and the duo were to rem ain in front for th e duration . Chris Kallen (4 00 Yam ) h ad go tten a fi e start, coming into the pits in third, n a position p artner Dave Wood maintained on the second loop. Tom Schell (25 0 Suz ) and Monte Lee (Yam ) were right behind them for those tw o loops. On the third loop , Schell made his move and got into second, p assing Kallen and Mark. On the next loop, Mark dropped out. Morgan Malocco and Larkin Wight had spent the nice circulating in the top five, onl y to have their race com e to an abrupt, albeit spectacular, con clusion. Wight was ab oard when the throttle stuck open, dumping him and sending the 400 Mono on up the hill and into the air quite away s. Meanwhile, BiB Conroy and Mike Johnston were moving through the pack. Bill had been running well when his 450 Moto Villa crashed near the pits. He came in with a broken handlebar and Johnston took off his 360 ViIIa running twel fth. Running the remainder of the race on Mike's bike, they were into sixth on the third loop and still movin g, up t o third on the ne xt tour. KeUy had broken a shock on his machine, so he rode Brooks' Bul for the last tw o loops, picking up another flat as he was starting the fmal lap . The tire stayed on the rim , Tom on the bike, and Cordis was there to congratulate him when he came in. Schell and Lee were in next, second 250 Experts. Conroy and Johnston picked up third, first Open Experts , with Kallen and Wood right behind th em. Monty Lee and Neil Crane (KTM /Yam ) had been in third at one point, but a broken chain put them ou t . With their demise, Mike Cole and Dean Kirk, on a pair of 250 Huskys, went on to take the Amateur lead and the win at fifth overall. At sixth, Gordon Schmid and Ramon Lowe (400 Yam) swept the Senior class. Dean Mille r and Tony Steffins were next in, grabbing third 250 Expert. Tim Plant and Rick Mulle r (DMG) finished eighth in spite of two flats and took first smallbore. Open Exp ert teams Jack Orndoff/John McDoweU (Yam{Hus) and Jim Artz/Pat McEvoy (Yam) rounded ou t the top ten. At eleven th, Tony Harris and Steve Clugsten [Yarn] took first Open Am ateur. Brothers Tom and Tim Phillips (250 KTM/Hus) took the Novice win , getting ahead of Eddie Smith and Tom Mattox (4 00 Yam ) in the closing laps . Smith and Mattox to ok second, first Open. At third, Richard Round and Joe Rayle (Yam/Hon ) took first small-bore. Terry William s and Riley Duncan (Suz /Yam) were -th e overall Beginner winners, Wit h Lee Chapin and Paul Baker (Yam /Mon ) in second fo r first 250 honors. At fourth, Douglas WiIIiams and John Pete rson (Hon/Yam) were first in the small -bore class . Michele Griffin ' and Lo ri Farmer (Hus/C-A) won the Powder Puff class after a poor start. Donnie Morrison and KeUy Kline (Yam) were dominant in the Mini class . • Results in Results Section.
