The Last California City Grand Prix Catal ina Grand Prix in the 50 's notice fourth 25 0 . Are we gonna have Mungenasts like Pen tons? Lei s Cu nn in gham came all the way from New Mexico to lead the 250's. Dan Bontrager was reputed to have driven a 1973 Yamaha 175 enduro to his victory. Van Pepper led the four 125 finishers out of 25 starters. He smoked the nearest competitor by 21 points. . The Timerline Enduro sported a special class for four stokes 351-? Triumphs and BSAs we re seen in the field, but the Yamaha TT cleaned house. It was ru mo red that Scotty Brown's custom seat produced an adverse airfoil effect and prevented him from a higher positon. Lisa Baker led the women and probably most the men on her 400 Husky. She was one of the 25-30 percent that did finis h (of about 300 riders). . • Buffalo Speedway Amateur Qualifier By Frank Harr ison CARROLTON, TEX., AUG. 14 With all the . top pros from Texas "up North" it would seem useless to have a good program of short track at this time of year ; Timberline Enduro STEAMBOAT SPRGS., COLO. , AUG. 8 In the middle of Colorado's Rockies, near the Wyoming border is Steamboat Springs, the home of the Steamboat Racing Association. For the last fou r years running, they 've hosted the Timberline Enduro. And this is it: ride up past the timerbline, then take a loo k fro m the t op of the world. The trick set-up for t his event is to have an instamatic camera in the - breast p oc ket of your Belstaff jacket. And b e prepared to lose a fe w points , if yo u don 't stop for at least a peek , y our goggles must still be covered fro m the last m udhole. Organizing a 100 mile enduro to the satisfaction of a large group of diverse in terests and talents has got to be a n ear hopeless task. John Worcester of Mountain Motor Sports in Steamboat Springs has taken the-job and produced an enduro best described as memorable. Worcester's goals in laying ou t an enduro was selecting a course that will n ot be impassable to the novice, yet challenging to the expert and as he says, " I want to give every rider something to remember - like the rock slide. " Certain ly every rider should find something to remember. Switchback trails that led just short of the ozone, genuine east coast-like slime riding, fireroading that would give Kenny Ro berts a few thrills, a rock slide for traction on a long uphill (the demise of the on e-t wo- fives), a few miles of water dike jumping, etc., etc. There was almost a character to each section in between checks. The fin al section was designed to se parate the men from the b oys. Whether th e Steamb oat Racing Ass ociation knew that the likes o f Ed Sc h midt an d Dave Mungenast would sh o w or n ot, they were prep ar ed with some mileage for the outstanding rider. Ed Schmidt took overall, dropping o n ly 14 p o in ts. The ta lk was t hat Ed fmished the event, stopped, cleaned the rims of m ud, tossed the Husky on its side. lubed the chain and checked it . over. Probably just getting ready for .another 100 miles. Dave Mungenast filled the 1st Open position with 17 points (second overall) . He was on the automatic Husky and however, the "stay at home" pro's along with a large contingent of amateurs from far and near pu t on a top notch dual program and the big names weren't even missed. Two complete programs were necessary with a National Amateur MIA Qualifier kicking off the evening with 35 riders from Illinois, Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas all trying for the National Final to be held in Toledo September 25-26 . One heat and final were run in each class with Yukon, Oklahoma's Mike Blake (Yam) winning the 200cc: Kansan Dennis Byren winning the 125: Tim Mertens (Bul) the 200; Ronnie Jones (Bul) the 250; and the best race of the evening, the 360 Main with Neal Jones quickest in tu rn one, Shreveport's "fast" Freddie Spencer on his t ail and L ub bock, Texas' Bubba Shobert running hard, all on Bultacos, Re-sh uffling came fast as Spencer took the lead and Jones dropped back to third while Shobert then pushed hard on Spencer. The finish was Spencer, Shobert, and Jones. With all the serious AMA business out of the way, the regular Pro-Am Short Track program blasted off with almost 100 riders competing. After qualifying heats, it was Carter Yamaha's Roger Schellenberger who really pu t it on them by winning the 65cc and 85cc mains back. to back With two full rows of riders sorted out for the 350 Main it was anybody's guess even after the start as everyone aimed at turn one pole - somehow it turned into an elbow to handlebar battle with Dallas Yamaha's Bruce Moore, Sherman Yamaha's Mike Cone and Rusty Patillo all briefly in the lead th rough turn two, however Cone came out leading on the back stretch , but with Moore tight o n his tail and Patillo still pushing hard. Then Moore drifted wide in fo ur of lap two letting Patillo in to start working on Con e , while Lu bb ock's Bubba Shobert moved into third . All this time, the pride of Stovall Yamaha, Shawn Stovall threaded his way through the p ac k from an almost rear position start p ic kin g them off o ne .an d two ata t ime. Just as Stovall m oves by in t o fo urth Shobert goes down leaving the finish to the "ole roadracer" Mike Co ne , Rusty Patillo, and Shawn Stovall. The Open even t was, sort of a fun thing as Oklahoma's Neal J o ne s did his first Ubig motor" ride on lvey's Harley-Davidson. The overpowered "short tracker" looked like a monster and just cruised around in front of Tim Linford, also II -D mounted and Steve Crow on his Triumph. • E lsinore Gr~d Prix in th e 60's California City Gr and Prix i n October 2 the 70's and 3 Trophies - Pins Over $5.000 cash & contingencies Entries ooen now - close seer, 20 Send $20.00 entry & 2 S .A.S.E . to ORA , PO Box 2605, California City , CA93505 Re fer t o Augu st 3 r d Cycle N ew s for furth er info o r ~II 7 14- 373~6 4 7 -------------------------':"1 [DiiAi"JJ r DESERT RACING ASSOCIATION <:-11omIlI City Gr8lld-Prtx Entry Blank ISoeial Seeurity I NAM~ No . l . . . - - J I I ADDRESS I I I I Rid ing Class: Beg_Nov.--Am ._Ex. _ _ Senior _ _ Powder Pu fl _ _ Minl _ _ Age --I I Make & Size of Bike 3 \/\!heel_ 51H I I Club (and or ) Shop I II do hereby Cert ify that I possess the necessary skills and physical enduranee for an event of t his type .
