with great interest that I read Jody ' Weisel's story. I would think, with everything working right, they should be able to go at least 155 mph with a 500cc Yamaha. I would, however, like to make a correction. Mr. Heukerott stated he would like to see a U.S. Nat ional Sidecar Championship. There is one. See S. R.L>.S. Me 4 Attention . The August issue of your AMA News contains your nomination ballot for our Class A represen tative on the Board of Trustees of the American Motorcyclist Association. Stimulated by proposal. from a special Task Force of which I served as chairman at the last AMA Congress, greater representation from the general membership is now a factor in guiding the activities of our Association - and thus it is more important than ever that our choices for representative. be carefully and thoughtfully submitted. . No t always is election of a noted and popular racer the best judgement, but rather a person who can deal in knowledgeable fashion with the financial and legislative as well as administrative aspects of making the AMA a successful organization to serve our needs. Fo r the past several years, Ron Sloan has been a dr iving force in numerous asp ects of Association activities, and as a businessman, off-road racer and former President of District 37, particularly attuned to land-use problems and their solutions. Sloan has indicated his need to rest from these time-consuming and expensive o bligat io n s as a Trustee and thus we must look for another dynamic leader to carry on where he leaves off. The Board of Directors of District 37 addressed itself to this problem at our last meeting, and this week gave its unanimous support to a man we know to be capable, dependable and energetic. Jim Wells is active in racing, has served as Vice-President of the District in terms distinguished by strides forward in areas of insurance and land-use, and is currently serving a second term as Chairman of the Board of Directors. He is also heading the Legal Task Force which unites motorcyclists of several MIA Districts and other racing organizations. Wells is a successful contractor, and as a businessman can act with good judgement and authority in handling budgets and funds, and understanding the fin an ci a l records which come under scrutiny of the MIA Board of Trustees. Imposing in both stature and his self-assured manner of making a point in debate, Jim will be prominent on the Board, and can make our ne eds well known to other Trustees. His untiring efforts in dealing with problems of land-use in the past can put his exp er tis e right at the top, where it is ne eded. On behalf of the District 37 Board of Directors, I ask your support in making Jim Wells our man on the Board of Trustees as Class A Represen tative from the Western Region. Please put his n ame on th e nomination form, page 23 of your August A MA News, and mail it in right now! LYNN WINELAND AMA Congressman, District 37 Sidecar sidelights A very good article on the World Sidecar closed course record by Mr. Heukerott, In the earlv 1960's I was involved in the records set by the late Florian Camathias at Monza, '0 it was If you have a "lost and found" department, I have a "found." On July 30, I found a helmet and boots sitting in the middle of a sandwash in the Shadow Mountains area above E1 Mirage. They are in good condition and I'm sure the owner misses them.
