Gill led Op en Pro duction from the firs t lap to th e finis h, never seriously challenged by seco nd-place Mike Vel asco (Kaw) . Fo r awhile Velasco was busy h olding o ff t hird ov era ll, first 750cc, Pau l Ritter (Duc). but in the end, it was Gill , Velasco, and Ritter cruising alo ne, a few seconds apart ," Gill wo n Op en Superstreet an d the Cam ber Comp an y 520 con tingency by beating J im Haberlin (T ri 970). " I wasn't trying to b e a smart ass," said Gill after the race, whe n asked wh y his lap times suddenly dropped and Hab erlin caugh t up to him during th e Superstreet race. Wally Karp ynec had the ho leshot o ff th e 250 GP line, followed by Harry Klin zmann and David Emde. By th e halfway mark of the first lap Emde had control, but Karp ynec held off Klin zmann . to the finish. Karp ynec credited his new-found speed to his Ma ck-equipped m o n o sh ock, Klin zm ann n was rec overing fro m a flu bo ut. Emde wo n with a giant lead T he talk in the pits before Open GP - was t hat Klinz mann migh t not ride the class, st ill feeling sick fro m t he 250 GP race . John Chermak, 200 Production class champ io n, led the first lap, chased by Bill McGrill (Yamaha 200 Prod), Bob Rroo ks (Kaw 100 GP), l\like McAvoy (Kaw 100 GP), Tim Ro be rt s (Suz 200 Prod), Jill Keenan (200 Ho n Prod), an d Flem Juliussen, (Kaw 100 GP) all in tight clu mp . One lap la ter in Tu m 18, it was McAvoy , McGrill, Brooks, Robert s, Che rmak , j uli ussen, and Keen an . McAvoy hel d and stretched out his lea d, but behind him chaos reigned. Another lap and McGrill was second, wi th Chermak trailing in third, and Juliussen , Keen an , Brooks, and Roberts fighting back and forth amo ng themselves. Then Kee nan crashed, end ing her back an d forth d ice with Ro be rt s and J uliu ssen. The procession stretched o ut. A t the finish , it was McAvoy, McGrill, Ch erma k, Roberts, J uliu ssen, and Brooks. Ch erm ak led the first lap of t h e 4 10 Pro du ction race, chased by Larry Cochran , Rob ert Lebo, Mike Ran ey, Alan Gingerelli, and To m Hayn er. Gingerelli blasted by for t he lead on t he seco nd lap, but ran off at the track cut-off for the short c ou rse. In stead of Rocky Rockwell (292) le ads J im Vialovos (188) in earl y scrap.
