moved within striking distance of Kipp
Classen (~TM) who was holding onto
second, and, began to put on the
pressure. Classen managed to hold him
off until the last lap, crashed. Schultz
rode to a solid second in mota two for a
second overall for the day. Gary
Murphy, riding for the first time on his
new KTM, came from way behind in the
second moto to chaUenge Dennis Brand
(Suz) for third but Brand was able to
hold Murphy off.
Danny Chandler (KTM ) held on to a
good second .in mota one of the Open
Expert clash where . Richter again

Ch an dle r (KTM) put on a great ride in
th e first mota, co ming up from last

catching up he got into trouble on the

mota with Jeff Watts (Hus) second.
Phil Oveland (CZ) had to work hard

half-way through the mota and had to
settle for second. In the se cond mota he
fought all the way with Charlie " The

CMC Night MX
By Steve Castillo
FREMONT, CAL., AUG . 5
More th an 350 ride rs turned out
tonight to battle on beautifully
prepared Fremont track. .Many
riders talked about how m uch fun
it was hitting the giant berms at full
speed an d several of the jumps were
m ore elevated than before allowing
_riders to soar higher and farther than
ever.
Mike Preston (Suz) and Kent Classen
(lion) were doing some really high
acrobatic stuff themselves. In moto one
of the 125 Pro race Preston jumped in
front of Classen with Don Cantaloupi
third. Cantaloupi was able to work his
way past Classen and really put a charge
on Preston. By the las t lap Cantaloupi
had closed righ t up, but at the flag
where it counts Preston kept his lead.
Mota two Preston was again the
winner of the start and moved away
from the field with only Classen and
Cantaloupi
right
up
with
him.
Cantaloupi soon had to retire with a
collapsed rear tire. Classen was now
driving hard on Preston and dove under
on the Suzuki rider in one of the tight
turns. Kent took off to win the mota,
but overall Preston got the win with
Classen second and Dave" Wood (Ho n)
third.
Wes Elrod was unbeatable aboard his
Mote-Villa in the first 500 Pro mota.
Bob Geffert took second on his new
Suzuki. Steve Scoffone on a CZ was also
up battling with Geffert but had to
settle for third in that mota. Round two
Elrod blew his chances for the overall
when he left the starting ga te' almost
looping h is bike. Elrod barely saved it,
but was dead last and" had to work up .
Geffert
was
enjoying
a
Bob
comfortab le le ad after briefly dueling
with Steve Scoffone. Wes Elrod was
making a valiant effort trying to work
up thr ough the pack but when the flag
came out fourth was the best he could
do. Overall it was Bob Geffert taking his
first Pro win in abou t a year.
Rich Voss (Bul) won the 250
Intermediate race tonight but it didn't
come easy. In mota one Rich went all
the way followed by Randy Kerslake
(Suz) and Rich Tiago (S uz ). Moto two
was the test for Rich, as Art Leonardi
who got 14th in the first mota got
inspired and walked awa y with the race.
Voss meanwhile had to work his tail off
to hold second with pressure co m ing
from Rich Tiago and Stuart Bussert
(Hus ). Secon d gave him the o verall win .
