I NORTHERN DATE ~ t (.0 tO') ,......, First of a twi-night doubleheader. Magoo on a borrowed Villa leads Scoffone's vintage CZ at Fremont. Sex and the GP Singles. Converted dirt bikes rule at SIR. WMRRA Two Day Jubilee KENT, WASH.,J UNE 26-2 7 The 25 0 Pro class saw seventeen machin es sta rt th e day Saturday. Th e first place $50 went to Vancouver's Ken Botham after a 30 lot of close racing with Seattle 's Bruce Lind. Each of the three heats saw different finishers from th ird on down. In the final heat, less than one second sep ar ate d first from fifth place. T hird overall was William Holden and fourth was T erry Bowyer b oth from Van couver, B.C. T he 500 GP class was decided by who finished all three heats. The event ua l winner was Portland's J ay Burchell with 1-2-1 fin ishes, Second was Vancouver 's William Holden with a DNF-3 -2. Seattle's Steve Schaefer looked lik e a sure winner on his 350 Yamaha but seizure problems put him out for the day. In the Open GP class, Ken Hague from Van couver put his 1000 Rickman/Kawasaki in front early in all three heats and surprised everyone by winning over travel weary Alan Barbie on his home built TZ750 Mono-shock, Keg beer, a charcoal y ou r own steak dinner and an overnight cam po ut party finished off a fine Saturday of racing. Sunday was again clear and warm with a magnificent Mount Rainier t owering over the race track looking some wh at surrealistic o ff in the distance. As practice drew to a close for the Second Annual Dealer 's Chall en ge five-hour Marathon, the temperature began to become an important factor. Most o f the two man teams began to look for a third rider before the start of the race. Thirty-one teams were ready to start at noon, but due to problems with our electronic clock, the start was delayed till 12:19. The teams of Bob Loose and Pete Gilmartin on a Lynnwood Kawasaki 400 Cafe Racer and Richard Healey, Ray Curry and Bill White on a self-sponsored 900 Kawasaki Production bike diced for the lead until Loose pitted on lap 18 . By the 33rd lap, 90 minutes into the race, the team of Healey et al, had built up a 48 second lead over the second place team of Rocky Phoenix, Dave Wilson and Tom Lambert on the 750 BMW sponsored by BMW Center of Seattle. On the same lap , Gilmartin went out with a fuel starvation problem that turned out to be a pinched ven t line. Th ey lost three laps and dropped from a very close third to a distant tenth, That moved the Roger Stanley and Randy Skiver on a Burien Honda 400 Production bike into third. On lap 34, J im Curry /M ike Robinson/Rick Fike's 1000 Kawasaki crashed while p itting, damaging the bike too. BMW went out on lap 77 with freak rod bearing failure. After the first three hours, the race turned into pretty much of a parade except for the drive from 10th postion by Loose and Gilmartin. T heir 400 Kawasaki was turning the fastest lap times all day, and every few laps, they would pick off another place in their drive toward th e leaders. Last year's winning team, of Steve Schaefer, Ken Botham and Alan Seddon on a Lynwood Kawasaki 750 Triple were in trouble from the start, and were plagued all day with p iston seizures and a host of assorted minor problems. On lap 115, four hours ten minutes into the race , Loose passed Skiver for second place. At 5 p.m., after four hours forty-one minutes of racing the overall and production class winner was the Healey/Curry/White 900 Kawasaki. They completed 153 laps or 345 mile s at an average speed of 80 mph including pit stops. This was an increase of 7 mph over last year's winning average. Second overall and first Open Cafe bike was the Loose team only 39 seconds ahead of third overall and First 410 Production class winner Skiver/Stanley. Both teams completed 150 laps . The hard luck award would have to go to the team of John Lunney, Richard Wascher and Bill Noble on another Burien Honda 400, who ran out of oil six minutes from the checkered flag while running fourth overall and second in class. • Results in Results Section. Fremont MX By Steve Castillo FREMONT,CAL.,JULY 28 Danny (Magoo) Chandler, back from the Superbowl, did what he does best on a borrowed MotoVilla tonight at Fremont raceway, that is crowd-pleasing! Chandler was hitting the berms harder and faster than an yone else exploding jhern in giant puffs. Chandler jumped out to the point in the 500 Pro class aboard the bigbore MV with Steve Scoffone a good distance back. Wes Elrod also on a MV was going at it strong with Duffy Collin riding one of the new automatic 360 Husqvarnas. For awhile Collin, in third, held off Elrod, but was later passed. Back up front Magoo was being hotly pursued by Steve Scoffone. On the last lap Scoffone passed Magoo but Magoo dove harder than Scoffone into the next turn and had him at the flag. Johnson (Yam) looked Bill unbeatable in the 250 Pro class as he pulled away from the gate. Following Johnson was George McNamara (KTM) with Neal Snarr (Suz) and Phil Crane (Suz) having a fierce battle for th ird. Johnson was out ahead about 10 seconds but by the time the last lap flag was given both Snarr and Crane had worked up to Johnson. Crane made his move on Snarr as he shot by the young rider to take second behind Johnson at the flag. I The 250 Intermediates were mixing it up pretty heavily also tonight with four riders tight.
