as a possib le Los Angeles Co un ty Gree n
Stickie Par k , in a cooperative project
between the U.S. Forest Service and the
Cou nty
Department of Parks &
Recreation. It ha s hosted what outsiders
describe as one of the toughest and best
trials events in th e Southern Califo rn ia

region.
The land is currently designated Open
for ORV use by the Forest Service.
Conve rt ing it to a Green Sti cki e Park
would no t affect the Fo rest Se rvice
ownership of it, bu t wo uld allow th e use
o f Gr een Stic ki e Funds to imp ro ve the
acc ess ro ads, const ruct a few flu sh
toilets, an d police the uncontrolled
sh ooting. More to th e point, it would
fo rmalize and make permanent the
motorcy clist's right to use th e area.

one m igh t call their presence an empty

cl assified as " par k", meaning " No
ORVs" .
Actually , th e net effec t cou ld n ot
hav e been bette r , for several reasons.
First, the rider s' c on tin ue d presen ce
emp hasises to the governmen t planners
th e fact tha t th ey've m et evetybody 's
n eeds e xcep t o urs. And th at 's in
violation of their own directives.
Second, at th is particular meeting, the
bik e-haters could ha rdly have mad e
bigger fools of themselves, screa ming,
arm-waving, and generally blowing their
cool that motorcyclists would da re
show up .
As o ne state landscape planner p ut it,
"I wo uldn't have b eli eved it. If
an ything, I ca me he re com mi tted to the
ot h er side, and wo uld have expecte d

it up and demonstrated it in t he parking
lot. The bureau crats h ad never seen
any thing lik e it . When a p assin g car

t rials club m ight, at some future da te,
get acces s to so me area in the San ta
Monicas on a o ne-t im e test b asis under a
"group cam p ing" p ermit fo r a lo w-key
fa mily o r club t rials meet. If t he ne t
effect is favora ble, there coul d be m ore
su ch m eets. If n o t, we at least t ried. As
th at sam e pl anner told CN, " Yo u nev er
saw a Sie rra Clubber Jay down and give
up , did yo u ?" Think a bo ut it, peop le.
