Vid ic then scooted into the lead with Denton now and Staten, finally realizing what he had done , ju mped back on in third. However, the race was not over , as Vidic moved to the back straightaway before the "Molly Blue': jump, j eff pulled off th e track with some typ e of mechanical trouble with his Maico , and that left Denton with the lead. It' also left Staten with the first overall, as Rex was able to finish second behind Denton in the final m o to. Denton was second overall and Vidic a disappoin ted third. In the 5 00 Pro class, after Bill Rubly, who won the first m o t o , took a hard crash in the second moto, Ron Turner ro de his Suzuki to t he win by cap turing the final two m o t os. Night Nat ional Motocross Championship on Friday , Sept. lOth. Intermediates and Juniors were looking . for valuable points that would put them in to what is now called one of the most prestigious races on the West Coast, and Pros, Mini Experts, and the "Over 30 Gang," who do not ne ed to qualify for the finals were on hand to keep their skills refreshed with the fast and tight Irwindale course. The 125cc Pro class saw the "King of Irwindale," Gary Denton, return to the winner's circle after a couple of weeks of bad luck. Den ton dominated all three of the five-lap motos to easily claim the overall class honors. Second overall went to consistent John Atwood, who placed third twice and second in the final moto, with third overall to Davy Carlson, aboard his FM F Honda. The best Pro racing of the night came in the 250cc division with plenty of riders ha ving a shot at win ning the overall, including "Rocket" Rex Staten, who was making his first Irwindale appearance in nearly six months. In the first five-lap moto, 1975 Pro Champion Bill Rubly took the lead followed by last year's Nigh t National Champion j~ff ~r~dk, ~~::rk ·"M Mali" Lawrence, ad Staten, and Denton, who was riding a CZ . Rubly and Vidic battled back and forth with Bill able to hold off the challenges of the "Glendale Rabbit." However, Rubly later missed the jump before the "Switchback Turn," and was disqualified from the race. Lawrence had also cut the course d uring the m oto and was given a last place finish, Taking the win was Vidic with second to Staten and thi rd to Denton. In the second round for the 250s, Rubly was not to be denied, as the Maico rider from Carson took the five-Iapper easily. Vidic had to settle for second followed by Staten and Denton. ' Mike Redding who has campaigned long and hard finally made the winner's circle and did it in style with the second double o f th e evening in the Mini Div, II . On the short track She lby Shamblin and ' Dean Albin, both members of the Riverside Mini-Mites, were two and three. On the half-mile it was David Nelson and Shelby Shamblin. Shelby's little brother kept th e family name alive as Shanon hit for two in the Mini ,Div , III . Shanon, also a member of the Riverside Mini-Mites, t opped club members Richard jones and Robbie Smith on the short track and turned around and topped Curtis Cannon and Richard on the half-mile. The sidehacks were on hand to run the TT course, with a few variations. The team of Don Davis and Fred Acevedo brought it all home with jesse Castrejon and Wayne Prescott in second. The Open Expert Half-Mile saw Eddie Lawson the winner but AI Glover sure put on the pressure. Eddie had a good lead bu t started to slack off and next thing he knew AI was riding double with him. It was short lived though as Eddie dialed it on and the T&M Yamaha was gone. Dennis Briggs rounded out the !l~ld with third. Dynamic ~:!g Davcnp~rt collected all the marble: in the -Op en E:$ert Short Track and AI Glover had Ii ..:: together in the 250 Ex pert Sh ort Track. On the Half Mile it was Greg Zehner in a photo finish wi th Dylan Neihart fo r the 250 Expert win, while Dorothy Rowe slipped in to third and held off five guys in the process. Vic Hensley, a po pu lar Corona Regular won his first trophy since he started riding at the big "C" .a nd he did it in the Open Novice Short Track. Lyn Wagstaff claimed the Open Novice Half Mile. Dy land Neihart decided to stop playing bridesmaid and zipped out front to win the Open Amateur Half Mile.
