Lal'orte was down with Bru ce McDougal listenin g to Bru ce explain how he pooped out and lo st a co uple p laces at the finish. The mood for the second moto was set as the bikes carne pushing o ut for the seco nd start and a Texas fan yelled over the fence to Steve W~, "Remember the Alamo !" Bob was J~nnings was Second round: more of the same Broc Glover went for it again right off t he start and led Lal' o rte and David Taylor. Farther back the top three riders in the nation were spread o ut ; Steve Wis~ was sixth, Hannah was eighth and Smith was 15th. Laf'orte took the lead away from Glover early in the moto and stepped up the pace to clear away a twenty second lead for himself, Glover was immediately under assault fro m Wis~, who had Hannah breathing down his neck, followed by Warr~n Reid, J ~ff J ennings, John Savitsky, and Marty Smith. Lal'orte 's engine started to bog co m ing out of the numerous sweeping hairpins. H~ passed the me chanics area pointing at the rear wheel and Bob Hannah, Steve Wise, Marty Smith and Bro c Glover took immediate advan t age o f h is hardship. Two laps lata the problem cleared up and Lal'orte started to come back. J~nnings moved to fourth place and then started to suffer from the heat, The sixteen year old faded back to seventh in as many lap s. Hannah was now firmly in command of the overall as Marty moved past Wis~ to take second, Lal'orte nip p ed by Wise for third and on the next to the last lap the order read: Hannah, Smith, Lal'orte, Wis~, Glover, Savitksy, Ron Turner and J ~ff J ennings, On the last lap Hannah crossed the finish line with his hand raised in victory, Smith crossed with his head lowered, Lal'orte was third and up set, Gl over was a gleeful fo urth, J en nings h ad recovered to re-p ass bot h T urner and Savitsky fo r fifth, Warr~n Reid was eighth, David Taylor and Bruce McDougal were ninth and tenth, Steve Wis~ crashed into the nylon fence on the last lap and couldn 't get his bike untangled in time. Stop wa tches were started and the thirty minutes slo wly dragged by. At the end of the time no claim had been made, everyone smiled, but Bob Hannha's smile was the broadest because he had won his fifth National of the year an d he had a bike to rid e next wee k.
