on the outside flat out, into the lead. But coming half-way through the north turn the Norton let go and Jorgy coasted to a stop. Hateley was now in the lead and Mike Myers was letting it all hang out but couldn't catch the Norton. The presentation wa s happy , although it was hard to watch the smiling Hateley get his awar d while there was frantic activity going on behind in the Woods pit. Hateley spoke delightedly of the machine he was riding for the very first tim e, "Fantastic handling", and "really a great motorcycle:' This Norton number two is actually sixty pounds lighter than Jorgensen's freight train, which was undergoing mechanical repairs at that point. The primary chain had let go and it was only quick action by J orgy that had prevented the usual devastation that occurs within when a primary breaks. Next, the Novice Main lined up and at the end of lap one it was Randy Mamola first, then Mark Murray and Eddie Lawson. Murray's Kawasaki got away from him, flying high in the air in the south turn an d a restart was ordere d . This gave alternate Da ve Lujan a chance to move into the race. This time it was Law so n first into turn one, but Don Bailey (Kaw) took over with Mamola third. Mamola was going very fast and got by Bailey, but Charlie Summers was moving. He finally took Rick DeLacy's fourth spot, Mamola was now first and Eddie Lawson had p assed Bailey for second. Bailey wasn't giving up one inch however. Lawson, who has an impressive record on his Bultaco was right after the super-lightweight Mamo!a, and on the last lap he went driving for the low groove in the north turn. Glued together, they sh o t for the line, Lawson getting him by half a bike length at th e flag. / Starter Al Mintz thought Gordie Kidd had started th e Junior Main, but not Gordie, so a red flag brought the riders back for a re-start, with Kidd in the back row . Scott , Pearson sho t out in front, and stayed out th ere , with Steve Fortune second and t he n Randy Gibbs. Gibbs challenged Fortune, and got him, but it wa s still Pearson's race. Rod Sexton then arrived o n Fortune's rear wheel and the p air of th em made a real race out of it fo r several laps. Ted Davidson's plans for a win w ere done in by a broken rocker arm. Off went the Experts, .J o rgensen and Hateley first and second, then Tom Berry (H·D) and Dan McWhorter. All eyes were on Ted Boody as t he - youngster j ust came on up thro ugh the gro up of Ascot regulars to take over third by dragging past Berry on the inside o f the back chute. Berry couldn't keep the pace and was soon back a b it , along with Dan McWhorter who couldn't stay in front of Walt Foster any longer. Foster moved into fo urth and behind it was Allison, Myers and Bostrum, Still up front was Jorgensen, Hateley and 'Bo ody and another gap before Foster. Finally Mike Myers got free and moved into fifth, making it three riders in .a row all carrying versions of number ~ry Scott The unique team of rebuildable perfo rmance suspension comp onents made specifically for road race, short t rack, T.T ., MX, enduro and desert / riding means winning performa nce to ride rs of all classes. The finish was the same, and the distance between th e three front runners and the rest of the riders makes the prospect of wh o will be th e winner of the Eight Mile Na tional even more exciting.
