Story & photos by Judy Kinnaman LUCERNE v ALLEY, CAL., AUG. 8 As the banner dropped for the third annual Dustm akers Dustbowl, two desert dandies surged ahead of the pack, Mitch Mayes (Hus) and Larry Roesele r (Hus) . The p air ba ttled for the lead with Mayes acquiring a slight edge on Roe seler when suddenly he seized. Roeseler flew on by b ut experienced the same pro blem himsel f ,n o t far from the fi ish , giving n Mayes the chance he needed to gas it fo r th e overall win . Along th e co ur se, m an y riders were having problem s. After a st ro ng start Bru ce Ogi lvie (H-D) was forced o ut due to mechanical m alfunctio ns as was Bren t Wallingsford (H us). Second o vera ll went to Jeff Kirk (Yam) , who also took the second Open Expert class position, followed by Mike Edmondson (Yam). Fourth overall an d first 250 was Brian Wright, on his first ride with his new Hu sky. Craig Kinnaman (Suz) finished second 250, followed by Tom Schell (Suz) . Russ Jenkins (Yam ) took the first Expert C bike win, with Chuck Green (Yam ) second and Mike Butler (Ho n ) third. The first Trail Ex pert was Kelsey Darren (Yam), with Pete Andelman (Yam) and Don Keiser (Car ) rounding out the top three. The Senior Expert Open class was won by Art Knapp (Hus), fo llowed by Dick Camp (Yam) and Bob Bullyslad (Yam) . First Senior 250 was Jack Froelick with George Walker (C-A) second. The y oungest racer was a 9 year old Begin ner, Kevin Patterson, who placed tenth in the Begin ner class. Du stb o wl was an accurate des cription of the 40·mile loop raced twice by the participants.
